Global leader in stainless steel coil fabrication services
Type 904L is a superior high-alloy austenitic stainless steel, celebrated for its exceptional corrosion resistance. The 904L alloy (UNS N08904) stands out as a super austenitic stainless steel, versatile across various processes with moderate to high corrosion resistance. Its high chromium and nickel content, fortified with molybdenum and copper, ensures an impressive resistance to corrosion. The alloy's rich chemistry, featuring 25% nickel and 4.5% molybdenum, offers superior resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking, pitting, and general corrosion compared to 316L and 317L molybdenum-enhanced stainless steels. Initially designed to endure dilute sulfuric acid conditions, the 904L alloy is also resilient against most organic acids and other inorganic acids, including hot phosphoric acid. Furthermore, 904L alloy is easily weldable and can be seamlessly fabricated using standard shop procedures.

What are 904L's best qualities?
- This superior grade of stainless steel, known for its low carbon content, is fortified with high copper levels, enhancing its resistance to potent acids such as sulphuric acid. The elevated nickel content ensures exceptional resistance to stress corrosion cracking. Additionally, 904L stainless steel provides outstanding protection against crevice corrosion and stress corrosion cracking, vulnerabilities common in other steel forms. Ideal for both moderate and aggressive environments, it thrives in demanding conditions, including exposure to warm waters and chlorides.
- 904L stainless steel boasts remarkable heat resistance, enduring temperatures up to an impressive 400 degrees Celsius. It can be heat treated efficiently within a range of 1090 to 1175 degrees Celsius, followed by rapid cooling. This method of heat treatment is highly effective for hardening 904L steel, ensuring optimal performance.
- Due to its unique composition, 904L steel is nonmagnetic, offering superior weldability, formability, and toughness across various scenarios.
- 904L steel can be seamlessly welded using conventional techniques, eliminating the need for pre-heat or post-weld heat treatments.
What is 904L used for?
Renowned for its high purity and low sulfur content, 904L stainless steel is a popular choice in the construction of luxury watches and various industrial applications. Below are some key uses of 904L steel:
- Seawater cooling devices.
- Wiring in electrostatic filtration devices.
- Components in oil refineries.
- Parts for gas scrubbing plants.
- Machinery for pulp and paper processing.
- Components in machinery for sulfuric, acetic, and phosphoric acid processing plants.
Fabrication Data
- Alloy 904L can be seamlessly welded and processed using standard shop fabrication methods.
Cold Forming
- 904L stainless steel exhibits excellent ductility and forms easily. However, the inclusion of molybdenum and nitrogen may necessitate more robust processing equipment compared to standard 304/304L grades.
Hot Forming
- Hot working procedures for 904L steel should be conducted at temperatures ranging from 1562 to 2102°F (850-1150°C). Typically, hot working is followed by a solution anneal and quench. However, if the hot forming of 904L is halted at temperatures above 2012°F (1100°C) and the material is immediately quenched, further heat treatment may not be necessary. It is crucial to ensure the entire workpiece is quenched from temperatures above 2012°F (1100°C). If partial heating or cooling falls below this threshold, or if cooling is too slow, hot working should be followed by solution annealing and quenching. 904L should undergo solution annealing at 1940-2084°F (1060-1140°C).
Machining
- With a cold work hardening rate higher than 410 and 304 stainless steels, Alloy 904L poses some machinability challenges.
Welding
- Alloy 904L is compatible with most conventional welding techniques. Thanks to its uniform austenitic structure and balanced distribution of alloying elements, the segregation seen in other alloys is minimal. During solidification post-welding, elements like molybdenum, chromium, and nickel may segregate. This segregation, less pronounced in 904L, can affect corrosion resistance but is typically managed by welding with filler metals matching the base composition, though welding without filler metal is also feasible.
- The recommended welding consumables for 904L are 20 25 CuL covered electrodes and 20 25 CuL wire.
What are the versatile applications for which 904L stainless steel coils are ideally suited?
Thanks to their exceptional corrosion resistance, the superior-quality 904L stainless steel coils from Jiangsu Daxun Alloy Co., Ltd. find extensive application in the following industries:
- Petrochemical equipment, including reactors, where durability is crucial.
- Heat exchangers, offering reliable performance and longevity.
