Type 321 stainless steel is an advanced austenitic steel, mirroring many qualities of Type 304 but augmented with higher titanium and carbon content. It provides superior corrosion and oxidation resistance, with exceptional toughness even in cryogenic temperatures. The titanium addition offers multiple benefits: it prevents harmful carbide precipitation in the heat-affected zone (HAZ) during welding, provides partial protection against intergranular corrosion, and mitigates embrittlement in high-risk weld areas. Commonly used in high-temperature applications where parts are heated to 800°F-1500°F and exposed to corrosive conditions, 321 stainless steel remains robust. It is similar to 304 stainless steel but with more nickel and stabilized with titanium, which combines with carbon to prevent chromium carbide formation, maintaining corrosion resistance even at critical temperatures. It hardens well with cold working, is easily weldable, and rarely requires post-weld annealing, ensuring unmatched performance in diverse corrosive environments.

GENERAL PROPERTIES

  • 321 Stainless Steel Pipe (UNS S32100): A titanium-stabilized austenitic stainless steel offering exceptional overall corrosion resistance. With high resilience to intergranular corrosion after exposure to the chromium carbide precipitation range of 800 - 1500°F (427 - 816°C), this alloy resists oxidation up to 1500°F (816°C). It surpasses 304 and 304L steel pipes in creep and stress rupture properties and also boasts impressive low temperature toughness.
  • Stainless Steel Tube 321H (UNS S 32109): This variant features a higher carbon content (0.04 - 0.10) designed to enhance creep resistance and strength at temperatures exceeding 1000°F (537°C). The plate's carbon content facilitates dual certification in most scenarios.
  • Alloy 321: This alloy can only be strengthened through cold working, not heat treatment, and can be easily welded and processed using standard fabrication techniques.

CORROSION RESISTANCE

  • Applicable in pure phosphoric acid at lower temperatures.
  • Effective in up to 10% diluted solutions at elevated temperatures.
  • Resists polythionic acid stress corrosion cracking in hydrocarbon service.
  • Utilized in chloride or fluoride-free caustic solutions at moderate temperatures.
  • Not recommended for use in chloride solutions, even in small concentrations, or in sulfuric acid service.

PROCESSING

Alloy 321/H: Easily welded and processed by standard shop fabrication practices.

HOT FORMING

  • Recommended working temperatures for forging, upsetting, and other hot working processes are 2100 - 2300°F (1149 - 1260°C).
  • This alloy is not suitable for work at temperatures below 1700°F (927°C).
  • Water quenching or full annealing after working is essential to regain maximum corrosion resistance.

COLD FORMING

  • Highly ductile and forms easily.

WELDING

  • Easily welded by most standard processes.
  • Post-weld heat treatment is not necessary.

MACHINING

  • The hardening rate of 321 makes it less machinable than 410 stainless steel, but similar to 304.
