CORROSION RESISTANCE:
- 17-4 pH Stainless Steel Round Rod Cold Rolled for Aviation excels against corrosive attacks, surpassing standard hardenable stainless steels.
- Its corrosion resistance is comparable to Alloy 304 in most environments.
- Ideal for use in chemical, petroleum, dairy, and food processing industries, due to its exceptional corrosion resistance.
- However, prolonged exposure to stagnant sea water can lead to crevice or pitting corrosion.
WELDABILITY:
- 17-4 pH Stainless Steel can be successfully welded using most common fusion and resistance techniques.
- Avoid using oxyacetylene welding for this material.
- Typically, there is no need for pre-heating before welding.
- Maintain an inter-pass temperature below 248°F for optimal results.
- Achieve better toughness in welds through a complete heat treatment process.
ELEVATED TEMPERATURE USE:
- Offers excellent oxidation resistance up to approximately 1100°F.
- Note: Long-term exposure to high temperatures may reduce toughness in precipitation-hardened conditions.
PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:
- For forging, heat uniformly to 2150-2200°F and hold for half an hour per inch of thickness.
- The preferred hot forming temperature range is 650-900°F, while the steel remains austenitic.
- To optimize hardening operations, re-heat treat forgings at 1875-1925°F.
- Cool forgings below 90°F to ensure grain refinement.
PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:
- Alloy 17-4 is suitable for mild cold forming operations due to its hardness in the annealed (solution treated) condition.
- For severe cold working, heat treat the material to condition H1150 to prevent possible cracking.
- A bend radius exceeding 7T is often required.
- Re-aging at the precipitation-hardening temperature is recommended to improve stress corrosion resistance after cold forming.
MACHINABILITY:
- 17-4 pH Stainless Steel can be machined in both solution-treated and precipitation-hardened states.
