The increased nickel and molybdenum content in this grade significantly enhances its overall corrosion resistance, especially against pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments. Additionally, 316/316L seamless pipe offers excellent high-temperature tensile, creep, and stress rupture strength, coupled with superior formability and weldability. The 316L variant, with its low carbon content, resists sensitization, making it ideal for large welded components.

CORROSION RESISTANCE:

• Generally offers superior resistance compared to 304 stainless steel in numerous atmospheric environments and corrosive media due to its enhanced chromium and molybdenum composition.

HEAT RESISTANCE:

• Exhibits excellent oxidation resistance in intermittent service up to 1600°F (870°C) and in continuous service up to 1700°F (925°C).
• Grade 316L offers heightened resistance to carbide precipitation.

WELDING CHARACTERISTICS:

• Boasts exceptional weldability through all standard fusion techniques, with or without filler metals.
• For Grade 316, post-weld annealing is essential for maximum corrosion resistance, especially in heavy welded sections. This step is not necessary for Grade 316L.

HEAT TREATMENT:

• The annealing temperature range is between 1900°F and 2100°F (1038°C to 1149°C).
• Cannot be hardened via heat treatment.
• Special measures should be taken to account for a higher thermal expansion coefficient to prevent warping and distortion.

PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:

• Most manufacturers recommend a forging temperature range between 2100°F and 2300°F.
• Do not forge at temperatures below 1700°F (927°C). Optimal
• corrosion resistance can be achieved if the forgings undergo a final annealing process.

PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:

• Types 316/316L are extremely tough and ductile, making them ideal for cold working processes such as roll forming, swaging, cold heading, deep drawing,
  bending, etc., without significant difficulty.
• Parts that are severely cold-formed should be annealed to relieve stresses.

MACHINEABILITY:

• Type 316/316L is slightly more challenging to machine than Type 304 due to its toughness.
• Machining these grades yields tough, strong chips.
• Utilizing chip breakers and curlers is recommended.
• Opt for the largest possible tool and generous amounts of cutting fluid.
• Consider heavy positive feeds at low speeds since 316/316L work hardens quickly.
