Crafting Duplex 2507 Stainless Steel
- Duplex 2507 stainless steel is produced using advanced methods common to high-alloy steels. The process begins with melting scrap steel in an electric arc furnace and introducing the desired alloy elements. The molten mixture is then transferred to an AOD (argon oxygen decarburization) converter, where decarburization, sulfur refinement, and the removal of dissolved gases take place, enhancing the purity and properties of the steel.
- During the AOD process, nitrogen is typically introduced to the steel. The alloy is then moved to a ladle furnace for precise inclusion adjustments, ensuring optimal material quality.
- After these initial steps, the molten steel is directed to the casting operation, which produces either large metal blocks (ingots) or continuously cast blooms. These solid steel forms undergo further refinement through reheating, forging, or rolling to achieve the desired thickness. A solution annealing heat treatment, followed by rapid water quenching, ensures a uniform internal structure and superior mechanical properties.
