GENERAL PROPERTIES
- Grade 430 is a ferritic, straight chromium, non-hardenable stainless steel that offers excellent corrosion resistance and formability combined with practical mechanical properties. Due to its high resistance to various chemicals, it is ideal for diverse applications, with automobile trim and appliance components being the most common.
- Grade 430F is the free-machining variant of this grade, available in bar form for use in automatic screw machines. Grade 434 is the molybdenum-bearing counterpart of Grade 430, offering the same beneficial characteristics with enhanced corrosion resistance due to the molybdenum content.
- ASTM A240/A240M outlines the specifications for 430 in flat rolled products (plate, sheet, and coil). Other product forms, such as forgings and bars, have similar but not identical properties according to their respective specifications. The properties for Grade 430F in bar form are provided in ASTM A582.

CORROSION RESISTANCE:
- Grade 430 material provides robust resistance to a broad spectrum of corrosive environments, including certain organic acids. The highest corrosion resistance is achieved when highly polished or ground. Its resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion is comparable to that of grade 304. Like all ferritic grades, 430 exhibits very high resistance to stress corrosion cracking.
- The non-free machining grade, 430F, has significantly reduced resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, similar to other high sulfur free machining grades.
HEAT RESISTANCE:
- Grade 430 resists oxidation up to 870°C in intermittent service and 815°C in continuous service. Extended heating in the 400-600°C range may cause the material to become brittle at room temperature, but annealing can eliminate this effect.
HEAT TREATMENT:
- Solution Annealing - Heat to 815-845°C, hold for ½ hour per 25mm of thickness, then slow furnace cool to 600°C, followed by rapid air cooling. Slow cooling from 540-400°C can cause embrittlement.
- Sub-Critical Anneal - Heat to 760-815°C, then air cool or water quench.
- This grade cannot be hardened by thermal treatment.
WELDING:
- Pre-heat to 150-200°C if welding is necessary.
- To alleviate embrittlement in the weld metal and heat affected zone, it is recommended to perform a post-weld anneal at a temperature range of 790-815°C.
- Note that grain refinement will not occur in this process.
MACHINING:
- This material is easier to machine compared to standard austenitic grades such as 304.
- However, there remains a tendency for galling and pick-up on the cutting tool.
- Bars that have been lightly drawn are notably easier to machine than those in the annealed condition.
- The free-machining variant, Grade 430F, offers significantly improved machinability.
FABRICATION:
- The lower work hardening rate of this material makes bending and forming somewhat easier compared to grade 304.
- However, its lower ductility restricts very severe operations.
- For severe bends, ensure the bend axis is at right angles to the rolling direction.
- Severe cold heading of 430 wire is indeed possible.
