CORROSION RESISTANCE:
- Our POSCO 17-4 pH Stainless Steel Round Rod boasts superior corrosion resistance, outperforming standard hardenable stainless steels in corrosive environments.
- It offers corrosion resistance comparable to Alloy 304 across most media, ensuring longevity and reliability.
- Ideal for use in chemical, petroleum, dairy, and food processing industries, where corrosion resistance is crucial.
- Note: Prolonged exposure to stagnant seawater may lead to crevice or pitting attack.
WELDABILITY:
- Easily welded using common fusion and resistance methods, ensuring strong and durable joints.
- Not recommended for oxyacetylene welding, to maintain structural integrity.
- Generally, no pre-heating required, simplifying the welding process.
- Maintain an inter-pass temperature below 248°F for optimal results.
- Achieve better toughness in welds post complete heat treatment.
ELEVATED TEMPERATURE USE:
- Exhibits excellent resistance to oxidation at temperatures up to 1100°F.
- Prolonged exposure to high temperatures can reduce toughness in precipitation-hardened conditions.
PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:
- For forging, heat uniformly to 2150 / 2200°F and hold for half an hour per inch of thickness.
- Optimal hot forming temperature range is 650-900°F, while the material remains austenitic.
- Re-heat treat forgings at 1875-1925°F to ensure optimal hardening conditions.
- Cool forgings to below 90°F to achieve grain refinement and superior quality.
PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:
- Alloy 17-4 is suitable for mild operations due to its hardness in the annealed state.
- For severe cold working, heat treat to condition H1150 to prevent cracking.
- Bend radii exceeding 7T are often necessary for best results.
- Post cold forming, re-age at the precipitation-hardening temperature to enhance stress corrosion resistance.
MACHINABILITY:
- Machinable in both solution-treated and precipitation-hardened conditions, making it versatile for various applications.
