431 Stainless Steel Bar Material boasts exceptional corrosion resistance against a vast array of corrosive environments. It demonstrates a moderate resilience to saltwater in colder southern regions, though it may falter in warmer tropical waters. On the whole, the corrosion resistance of 431 Round Bar Material aligns closely with, or is marginally inferior to, that of 304 Grade Material. Optimal performance is achieved when the material maintains a smooth surface in its hardened and tempered state.
This material withstands scaling up to 925°C in intermittent service and 870°C in continuous service. However, it is generally ill-advised to use it at temperatures surpassing the pertinent tempering temperature due to a potential decline in mechanical properties.
Full Anneal - This process is impractical for this grade as it tends to harden even with slow cooling. Process Anneal - Heat to a range of 620-660°C and allow it to air cool.
Hardening is achieved by heating to a temperature range of 980-1065°C, holding for approximately 30 minutes, then quenching in air or oil. Pre-heating at 760-790°C can be advantageous for intricate parts or those that are already hardened. Tempering should be done to meet specific mechanical needs, at temperatures specified in the accompanying table.
Avoid tempering within the 425-600°C range due to a decrease in impact toughness. However, this effect is less pronounced in 431 compared to other martensitic grades.
Welding poses challenges due to a propensity for cracking. Pre-heating to 200-300°C is advised prior to welding. Grade 410 filler rod can be employed, but using Grades 308L, 309, or 310 will yield more ductile welds if matching properties are not essential. Post-weld heat treatment at 650°C is recommended.
In its annealed state, this grade is relatively easy to machine. However, machining becomes more complex if the material is hardened to above 30 HRC. The Ugima Improved Machinability variant of Grade 431 offers a significant enhancement in machining speeds and tool longevity.
Common applications include nuts and bolts, propeller shafting, pump shafts, beater bars, and marine hardware.
These properties are stipulated for bar products in ASTM A276. Similar, but not necessarily identical, properties are prescribed for other product forms such as plates and forgings within their respective specifications.
