The 431 Stainless Steel Bar Material boasts superb corrosion resistance against a vast array of corrosive environments. While it can withstand salt water in cooler southern regions, its performance in warmer tropical waters is less reliable. Overall, its corrosion resistance is on par with, or slightly below, that of 304 Grade Material. Optimal performance is achieved when the material has a smooth surface and is in a hardened and tempered state.
This material resists scaling up to 925°C in intermittent service and up to 870°C in continuous service. However, it is generally not recommended for use at temperatures exceeding the relevant tempering temperature, due to a decline in mechanical properties.
Full annealing is impractical for this grade as it hardens even with slow cooling. For process annealing, heat to 620-660°C and then air cool.
Harden this material by heating to 980-1065°C, holding for about 30 minutes, and then quenching in air or oil. Pre-heating at 760-790°C can be beneficial for complex parts or those already hardened. Temper according to mechanical requirements, following the indicated temperature guidelines.
Avoid the tempering range of 425-600°C due to a reduction in impact toughness, although this effect is less pronounced than in many other martensitic grades.
Welding this material is challenging due to the risk of cracking. A pre-heat of 200-300°C is advised before welding. While Grade 410 filler rod can be used, Grades 308L, 309, or 310 will deliver more ductile welds, provided matching properties are not required. Post-weld heat treatment at 650°C is recommended.
In its annealed state, this grade is relatively easy to machine. However, if hardened above 30HRC, machining becomes more difficult. The Ugima Improved Machinability version of Grade 431 offers significant improvements in machining speeds and tool life.
Ideal for nuts and bolts, propeller shafting, pump shafts, beater bars, and marine hardware.
The properties specified here are for bar products in ASTM A276. Similar, but not necessarily identical, properties are specified for other products such as plates and forgings in their respective specifications.
