INTRODUCTION

  • DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 Alloy Tube (UNS R56400) is the most popular titanium alloy. It is a duplex alpha+beta titanium alloy that uses aluminium as an alpha stabiliser and vanadium as a beta stabiliser. This high-strength alloy can be employed at cryogenic temperatures of around 800°F (427°C). ATI Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy is used in annealing, solution treatment, and ageing. Compressor blades, discs, and rings for jet engines; fuselage and space capsule components; pressure containers; *** cases; helicopter rotor hubs; fasteners; and crucial forgings with a high strength-to-weight ratio.
  • The alloy is initially melted using vacuum arc (VAR), electron beam (EB) or plasma arc hearth melting (PAM). Remelting is achieved in one or two vacuum arc steps.

HEAT TREATMENT

  • Annealing at 1,700-1,900°F (927 - 1,038°C) is done where high hardness, tensile and fatigue strength are desired.
  • DAXUN 6-4™, Grade 5 Alloy can be heat treated in several ways.
  • 1. Anneal: 1,275 -1,400°F; (691 - 760°C), ½ to 2 hours, air or furnace cool
  • 2. Stress Relief Anneal: 1,000 -1,200°F; (538 - 649°C), 1 to 8 hours, air or furnace cool
  • 3. Solution Heat Treatment: 1,675 -1,750°F; (913 - 954°C), 1 hour, water quench
  • 4. Aging Treatment: 975 -1,025°F; (524 - 552°C), 4 to 8 hours - air cool
  • The very best of properties In the solution treated and aged condition, small cross sections are obtained that are rapidly
    quenched. Larger sections sizes and/or a quench delay may cause properties to be lower than the optimum values.

HARDNESS

Typical hardness in the annealed condition is Rockwell C 30-34, and about Rockwell C 35-39 in the solution and aged condition.

FORGEABILITY/ FORMABILITY

  • DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy tubes are forged at 1,750°F (954°C), with an end forging temperature of 1,450°F (788°C). For optimal results, a reduction of at least 35% is recommended.
  • DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy presents challenges in forming at room temperature, even when annealed. Consequently, rigorous forming processes like bending or stretching are performed on annealed material at elevated temperatures up to 1,200°F (649°C) without compromising mechanical properties. Creep forming is utilized for hot sizing or forming within the temperature range of 1,000 to 1,200°F (538 to 649°C).

MACHINABILITY

  • DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy can be machined following the practices used for austenitic stainless steels. This includes slow speeds, heavy feeds, rigid
    tooling, and significant use of non-chlorinated cutting fluids.

WELDABILITY

  • DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V Grade 5 Alloy Titanium Tube is readily weldable in both annealed and solution-treated forms, with aging.
  • taking place during the post-weld heat treatment. Care must be taken to prevent contamination by oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen. Fusion welding should be conducted in an inert gas-filled chamber or with an inert gas tail shield protecting the molten metal and adjacent hot zone. Spot welding, seam welding, and flash welding can be performed without the necessity of a protective environment.

SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS

  • DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy is susceptible to hydrogen contamination from improper pickling, and can absorb oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon during forging, heat treatment, and brazing processes. Such contamination reduces ductility, negatively impacting notch sensitivity and forming properties.

Heat Treatment

Annealed at 1,700-1,900°F (927 - 1,038°C) for enhanced hardness, tensile strength, and fatigue strength.
DAXUN 6-4 Grade 5 Titanium Tube can undergo various heat treatment processes.
1. Annealing: Conduct annealing at temperatures between 1,275 - 1,400°F (691 - 760°C) for a duration of ½ to 2 hours. Allow the material to cool either by air or in a furnace.
2. Stress Relief Annealing: Perform stress relief annealing at temperatures ranging from 1,000 - 1,200°F (538 - 649°C) for a period of 1 to 8 hours. Cool the material using air or a furnace.
3. Solution Heat Treating: Execute solution heat treating at temperatures of 1,675 - 1,750°F (913 - 954°C) for 1 hour, followed by a water quench for optimal results.
4. Aging: Age the material at temperatures between 975 - 1,025°F (524 - 552°C) for 4 to 8 hours, then allow it to air cool.

Optimum Properties

Achieve optimum properties in small cross sections with rapid quenching in the solution-treated and aged condition. Note that larger cross-section sizes or delayed quenching may not yield optimal properties.

Hardness

In its annealed condition, the typical hardness ranges from Rockwell C 30-34. When solution-treated and aged, the hardness generally increases to Rockwell C 35-39.

Forgeability/Formability

DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V Titanium Tube, Grade 5 Titanium Tube should be forged at a steady temperature of 1,750°F (954°C) with a final forging temperature of 1,450°F (788°C). A minimum reduction of 35% is recommended for optimal performance.

While DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V Titanium Tube, Grade 5 Titanium Tube is challenging to form at room temperature, even when annealed, severe forming operations such as bending or stretching are feasible at annealed temperatures up to 1,200°F (649°C) without altering mechanical properties. Utilize creep forming for hot sizing or forming at temperatures between 1,000 to 1,200°F (538 to 649°C).

Machinability

DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V Titanium Tube, Grade 5 Titanium Tube can be machined using techniques suited for austenitic stainless steels, involving slow speeds, high feeds, and robust tool rigidity, coupled with ample non-chlorinated cutting fluids.

Weldability

DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V Titanium Tube Grade 5 Titanium Tube is highly weldable in both the annealed and solution-treated conditions, with aging occurring during post-weld heat treatment.

Ensure precautions are taken to prevent contamination from oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen. Fusion welding can be performed in an inert gas-filled chamber or with an inert gas tail shield over the molten metal and adjacent hot areas. Techniques like spot welding, seam welding, and flash welding can also be performed without requiring a protective atmosphere.

Special Considerations

Be aware that DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V Titanium Tube, Grade 5 Titanium Tube is susceptible to hydrogen contamination from improper pickling and can absorb oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon during processes such as forging, heat treating, and brazing. This contamination can negatively impact ductility and formability, as well as increase notch sensitivity.
