Leading Stainless Steel Sheet Suppliers in China
Grade 904L:
- Austenitic stainless steel grade 904L is a high-alloy, low-carbon, non-stabilized steel. Enhanced with copper, it offers superior resistance to strong reducing acids, especially sulfuric acid. It also provides robust protection against chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking and pitting/crevice corrosion.
- This grade boasts exceptional formability and weldability while remaining non-magnetic under all conditions. Its austenitic structure ensures outstanding toughness, even at cryogenic temperatures.
- 904L contains substantial amounts of nickel and molybdenum, which are costly elements. In numerous applications where 904L once excelled, Duplex stainless steel 2205 (S31803 or S32205) now performs equally well at a more economical price. Consequently, the use of 904L has diminished over time.
Corrosion Resistance:
- 904L boasts remarkable resilience to a wide range of conditions and was initially developed to withstand sulfuric acid. This material excels in warm seawater and other high-chloride environments, demonstrated by its PRE of 35. Its high nickel content significantly enhances resistance to stress corrosion cracking compared to standard austenitic grades. Copper in 904L provides superior resistance to sulfuric and other reducing acids, especially in extremely aggressive 'mid concentration' ranges.
- The corrosion resistance of 904L is generally intermediate between that of standard austenitic grade 316L and highly alloyed 'super austenitic' grades containing 6% molybdenum or equivalent elements.
- Compared to molybdenum-free grades like 304L and 310L, 904L offers less resistance to highly concentrated corrosive environments.
- For optimal resistance to stress corrosion cracking in demanding environments, 904L should undergo solution treatment after cold working.
Heat Resistance:
- 904L exhibits strong oxidation resistance but suffers from structural instability (precipitation of brittle phases like sigma) at elevated temperatures, similar to other highly alloyed grades. It is not recommended for use above 550°C. The ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code specifies design stress values for 904L up to 371°C.
Heat Treatment:
- Solution Treatment (Annealing): Heat to 1090-1175°C and cool rapidly. This grade cannot be hardened by thermal treatment.
Welding:
- 904L can be welded successfully using all standard techniques. However, due to its fully austenitic solidification, it is prone to heat cracking, especially in restricted weldments, warranting caution. Pre-heating is not recommended, and post-weld heat treatment is typically unnecessary. Grade 904L rods and electrodes are prequalified by AS 1554.6 for welding.
Fabrication:
- 904L is a high-purity, low-sulfur grade, which means it does not machine as easily as grades designed for machinability. Nonetheless, conventional methods can be used to machine 904L. Achieving a small radius of bend is straightforward and is generally done cold. While subsequent annealing is typically unnecessary, it should be considered if the fabricated part will face severe stress corrosion cracking conditions.
Typical Applications:
- 904L is used in the processing of sulfuric, phosphoric, and acetic acids; pulp and paper processing; components in gas scrubbing plants; seawater cooling equipment; oil refinery components; and wires in electrostatic precipitators.
Specified Properties:
- According to ASTM A240M, these properties are required for flat rolled products like plates, sheets, and coils. Other products such as pipes, tubes, and bars have similar characteristics listed in their respective specifications.
