Type 321 stainless steel is an advanced austenitic steel, boasting similarities to Type 304, but enhanced with higher titanium and carbon content. This ensures unparalleled corrosion and oxidation resistance, along with exceptional toughness even in cryogenic conditions. Titanium in 321 stainless steel provides numerous benefits: * Prevents detrimental carbide precipitation in the weld's heat affected zone (HAZ). * Offers partial protection against intergranular corrosion. * Reduces embrittlement in high-stress weld areas. 321H stainless steel excels in applications where parts are heated to carbide precipitation temperatures (800°F-1500°F) and subjected to corrosive environments. Although 321 stainless steel mirrors 304 stainless steel, it contains more nickel and is stabilized with titanium, which interacts preferentially with carbon, preventing chromium carbide formation at grain boundaries. This preserves its corrosion resistance by minimizing chromium consumption near grain borders during critical temperature exposure. This grade hardens well through cold working, is easily weldable, and seldom requires post-weld annealing to maintain its superior performance in various corrosive conditions.

GENERAL PROPERTIES
- 321 Stainless Steel Pipe (UNS S32100) is a titanium-stabilized austenitic stainless steel that offers exceptional overall corrosion resistance. This high-performance alloy excels in resisting intergranular corrosion after exposure to chromium carbide precipitation temperatures of 800 - 1500°F (427 - 816°C). It can withstand oxidation up to 1500°F (816°C) and demonstrates superior creep and stress rupture properties compared to 304 and 304L steel pipes. Additionally, it maintains excellent low-temperature toughness.
- Stainless Steel Tube 321H (UNS S 32109) is an enhanced carbon content variant of this alloy (0.04 - 0.10), engineered to offer increased creep resistance and strength at temperatures exceeding 1000°F (537°C). In many situations, the carbon content permits dual certification.
- Alloy 321 achieves its toughness exclusively through cold working, not by heat treatment. It can be effortlessly welded and processed using conventional shop fabrication techniques.

CORROSION RESISTANCE
- Exhibits excellent general corrosion resistance comparable to 304.
- Engineered for use within the chromium carbide precipitation range of 1800 - 1500°F (427 - 816°C).
- Suitable for use in most diluted organic acids at moderate temperatures.
- Applicable for use in pure phosphoric acid at lower temperatures.
- Effective in up to 10% diluted solutions at elevated temperatures.
- Resists polythionic acid stress corrosion cracking in hydrocarbon service.
- Usable in chloride or fluoride-free caustic solutions at moderate temperatures.
- Not recommended for chloride solutions, even in small concentrations, or for sulfuric acid service.
PROCESSING
Alloy 321/H can be readily welded and processed by standard shop fabrication practices.
HOT FORMING
- Ideal working temperatures for forging, upsetting, and other hot working processes are 2100 - 2300°F (1149 - 1260°C).
- This alloy is unsuitable for work at temperatures below 1700°F (927°C).
- Material must be water quenched or fully annealed post-working to restore maximum corrosion resistance.
COLD FORMING
- Highly ductile and easy to form.
WELDING
- Easily welded by most standard processes.
- Post-weld heat treatment is unnecessary.
MACHINING
- The hardening rate of 321 makes it less machinable than 410 stainless steel but similar to 304.
