The 431 Stainless Steel Bar Material boasts outstanding corrosion resistance across a broad spectrum of corrosive environments. While it shows some resilience to saltwater in cooler southern regions, it is less effective in warmer tropical waters. Its overall corrosion resistance is comparable to, or slightly lower than, that of 304 Grade Material. Optimal performance is achieved with a smooth surface in the hardened and tempered condition.
This material resists scaling in intermittent service up to 925°C and in continuous service up to 870°C. However, it is generally not recommended for use above the relevant tempering temperature due to a reduction in mechanical properties.
Full annealing is impractical for this grade as it hardens even when cooled slowly. For process annealing, heat to 620-660°C and air cool.
This grade is hardened by heating to 980-1065°C, holding for about 30 minutes, then quenching in air or oil. Pre-heating at 760-790°C is beneficial for complex parts or those already hardened. Temper according to mechanical requirements at temperatures specified in the accompanying table.
Avoid the tempering range of 425-600°C due to diminished impact toughness, though the effect is less pronounced than in most other martensitic grades.
Welding this material is challenging due to the risk of cracking. A pre-heat of 200-300°C is recommended before welding. While Grade 410 filler rod can be used, Grades 308L, 309, or 310 will produce more ductile welds if matching properties are not essential. After welding, heat treat at 650°C.
This grade is relatively easy to machine in the annealed condition, but machining becomes more difficult with hardness exceeding 30HRC. The Ugima Improved Machinability version of Grade 431 significantly enhances machining speeds and tool longevity.
Ideal for nuts and bolts, propeller shafting, pump shafts, beater bars, and marine hardware.
These properties are specified for bar products in ASTM A276. Similar, though not identical, properties are specified for other products like plates and forgings in their respective specifications.
