Grade 409
- Grade 409 is a titanium-stabilized ferritic stainless steel known for its exceptional versatility. This general-purpose chromium stainless steel is predominantly employed in automotive exhaust systems. It excels in applications where mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, and weldability are prioritized above aesthetics, particularly at elevated temperatures.
- ASTM standards, notably ASTM A240M for flat-rolled steel, now recognize S40910, S40920, and S40930 as 'sub-grades' rather than using the generic term Grade 409.
- These grades are stabilized to varying degrees with titanium, niobium, or a combination of both. Any of these could be certified as S40900 (Grade 409). ASTM A268M specifically lists the standard Grade 409 for tubing applications.
Corrosion Resistance:
- Grade 409 showcases robust resistance to both atmospheric and exhaust gas corrosion. In most conditions, a light surface rust forms, acting as a barrier to further corrosion, though it is not suitable for cosmetic purposes. Its corrosion resistance is comparable to 3CR12 and 12% chromium martensitic grades (410) but is less than the 17% chromium grade 430.
Heat Resistance
- 409 stainless steel can withstand scaling in intermittent service up to 815°C and in continuous service up to 675°C. However, these limits can vary depending on the specific service environment.
Heat Treatment
- For annealing, heat to 790-900 degrees Celsius and then cool in air. Note that this grade cannot be hardened through heat treatment.
Welding
- Grade 409 is easy to weld, but pre-heating to 150-260°C is recommended. While Grade 409 or 430 electrodes or filler rods are suitable, welding with Grade 309 rods or electrodes is pre-qualified under AS 1554.6. These austenitic fillers enhance weld ductility.
- Post-weld annealing at 760-815°C is advised to enhance weld ductility.
Welding thin sections does not require post-weld annealing. Automotive exhaust tubing is typically welded autogenously, without filler metal.
To minimize grain formation impacts, all welding should be performed with minimal heat input.

- ASTM A268M specifies the properties of Grade 409 for annealed tubing, while ASTM A240M details the composition for coil and sheet applications. Specifications for other items may include similar but not identical properties.
Forming:
- 409 stainless steel can be effortlessly cut, blanked, stretch formed, and drawn. Its formability characteristics are very similar to those of carbon steel.
