What are 904L's best qualities?
- The 904L grade of stainless steel is distinguished by its low carbon content and high copper concentration, enhancing its resistance to potent acids, including sulfuric acid. With a high nickel content, it demonstrates formidable resistance to stress corrosion cracking and crevice corrosion, outperforming other steel types. This makes 904L ideal for use in diverse demanding environments such as warm waters and exposure to chlorides, suitable for both moderate and highly aggressive conditions.
- 904L stainless steel exhibits exceptional heat resistance, enduring temperatures up to 400 degrees Celsius. Its heat treatment ranges between 1090 to 1175 degrees Celsius, followed by rapid cooling, making it an excellent choice for hardening processes.
- Due to its unique composition, 904L stainless steel is nonmagnetic and boasts excellent weldability, formability, and toughness across various conditions.

Fabrication Data
- Alloy 904L demonstrates excellent weldability and can be processed using standard shop fabrication techniques.
Cold Forming
- 904L stainless steel is highly ductile and easily formable. The presence of molybdenum and nitrogen may necessitate more robust processing equipment compared to standard 304/304L grades.
Hot Forming
- Hot working procedures for 904L require temperatures between 1562 to 2102°F (850-1150°C). Generally, hot working should be followed by solution annealing and quenching. However, if the hot forming ends at temperatures above 2012°F (1100°C) and is immediately quenched, further heat treatment may be unnecessary. It is crucial that the entire workpiece cool from temperatures above 2012°F (1100°C). If partial heating or cooling occurs below this temperature, solution annealing and quenching are necessary. 904L should be solution annealed at 1940-2084°F (1060-1140°C).
Machining
- The cold work hardening rate of Alloy 904L makes it less machinable than 410 and 304 stainless steels.
Welding
- Alloy 904L is compatible with most conventional welding methods. Its austenitic structure ensures a uniform distribution of alloying elements. During welding, elements like molybdenum, chromium, and nickel may redistribute, potentially reducing corrosion resistance. However, this segregation is minimal in 904L, often welded with filler metal matching the base metal, though welding without filler metal is also feasible.
- The welding consumables for 904L are 20 25 CuL covered electrodes and 20 25 CuL wire.
