Grade 409
- Grade 409 is a high-performance, titanium-stabilized ferritic stainless steel. Renowned for its versatility, Grade 409 is predominantly utilized in automotive exhaust systems. This material excels in applications where mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, and weldability are prioritized over aesthetics, especially at elevated temperatures.
- ASTM requirements, notably ASTM A240M for flat rolled steel, have evolved to utilize S40910, S40920, and S40930 as specialized 'sub-grades' instead of the conventional Grade 409.
- These sub-grades are stabilized to varying extents with titanium, niobium, or a combination of both. Each can be certified as S40900 (Grade 409). ASTM A268M exclusively lists standard Grade 409 for tube applications.
Corrosion Resistance:
- Grade 409 offers commendable resistance to both atmospheric and exhaust gas corrosion. While a thin layer of surface rust may develop in most environments, it acts as a barrier to further corrosion but may not be ideal for cosmetic applications. Its corrosion resistance is comparable to Grade 3CR12 and 12% chromium martensitic grades like 410, though it is inferior to the 17% chromium Grade 430.
Heat Resistance
- Grade 409 exhibits impressive resistance to scaling, withstanding intermittent service temperatures up to 815°C and continuous service temperatures up to 675°C. These thresholds may vary depending on the specific service environment.
Heat Treatment
- For annealing, heat Grade 409 to 790-900°C and cool in air. Note that this grade cannot be hardened through heat treatment.
Welding
- Grade 409 is highly weldable, though pre-heating to 150-260°C is recommended. While Grade 409 or 430 electrodes/filler rods can be used, utilizing Grade 309 rods or electrodes is pre-approved per AS 1554.6, resulting in a more ductile weld.
- Post-weld annealing between 760-815°C significantly enhances weld ductility.
Welding small sections does not necessitate post-weld annealing. Typically, automotive exhaust tubing is welded autogenously, without filler metal.
To mitigate grain formation, ensure all welding is conducted with minimal heat input.

Ideal for automotive exhaust systems, including catalytic converters and mufflers.

- ASTM A268M outlines the specifications for annealed tubing made from Grade 409. ASTM A240M delineates the composition for other grades used in coil and sheet applications. Specifications for different items may share similarities but are not identical.

- Grade 409 stainless steel can be effortlessly cut, blanked, stretch-formed, and drawn. Its formability characteristics are closely aligned with those of carbon steel.
