CORROSION RESISTANCE:

• Due to its enhanced chromium and molybdenum content, our Stainless Steel Tube 316 ASTM A312 offers superior resistance compared to 304 in a variety of atmospheric environments and corrosive media.
  It excels in combating general corrosion, thanks to the increased chromium and molybdenum content.
• However, it is susceptible to pitting and crevice corrosion in warm chloride settings and stress corrosion cracking above 122°F (50°C).
• This steel grade is considered safe for potable water containing up to about 1000mg/L chlorides at ambient temperatures, reducing to about 500mg/L at
  140°F (60°C).
• Known as the "marine grade stainless steel," it is generally resilient but not resistant to warm seawater.

HEAT RESISTANCE:

• Demonstrates commendable oxidation resistance up to 1600°F (870°C) intermittently and 1700°F (925°C) continuously.
• Grade 316L shows heightened resistance to carbide precipitation.

WELDING CHARACTERISTICS:

• Offers excellent weldability with all standard fusion methods, whether using filler metals or not.
• Post-weld annealing is essential for Grade 316 heavy welded sections to achieve maximum corrosion resistance; this step is unnecessary for Grade 316L.

HEAT TREATMENT:

• The recommended annealing temperature range is from 1900 to 2100°F (1038 to 1149°C).
• This alloy cannot be hardened through heat treatment.
• Special measures must be taken to counterbalance the higher thermal expansion coefficient to prevent warping and distortion.

PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:

• Most manufacturers suggest a maximum forging temperature of 2100°F to 2300°F.
• Forging below 1700°F (927°C) should be avoided. Optimal corrosion resistance is achieved if forgings undergo a final anneal.
• Corrosion resistance is maximized with a final anneal.

PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:

• Types 316/316L, known for their toughness and ductility, can be easily cold worked through processes such as roll forming, swaging, cold heading, deep drawing,
  bending, etc., without any significant issues.
• Severely cold-formed parts should undergo annealing to relieve stresses.

MACHINABILITY:

• Due to their toughness, Type 316/316L stainless steels are somewhat more challenging to machine than Type 304.
• They require chip breakers and curlers due to their tough and strong chip characteristics.
• Using larger tools and substantial amounts of cutting fluid is recommended.
• Consider heavy positive feeds at low speeds to manage rapid work hardening.
• Heavy positive feeds at low speeds are advisable since 316/316L work hardens quickly.
