Finish Designation Method and degree of finish
No.1 After hot rolling, heat treatment, pickling or other equivalent treatment is applied.
No.2D Annealing and pickling are performed after cold rolling; material is soft with surface of silver-white luster; used for general applications and deep drawing.
No.2B After 2D finish, skin pass rolling is performed to obtain a more suitable luster; the surface becomes very exquisite; used for general applications.
No.3 Intermediate 100-120 grit finish; used for applications in which surface polishing is performed after shaping.
No.4 General 150-180 grit finish; used for restaurants and kitchen equipment and tools.
#240 240 grit finish; used when a finer finish than No. 4 is required; typically for restaurants and kitchen equipment and tools.
#320 320 grit finish polished product.
HL This finish is performed by continuous linear polishing using an abrasive of appropriate grain size; mainly used for architectural applications.
BA Achieved by performing bright annealing after cold rolling and then skin pass rolling to obtain even greater reflectance; provides excellent corrosion resistance; used for household appliances, kitchen equipment, and automobiles.

Grade 904L:

  • Austenitic stainless steel sheet of grade 904L is a non-stabilized, high alloy, low carbon steel. This grade stands out for its enhanced resistance to strong reducing acids, especially sulfuric acid, due to the inclusion of copper. Moreover, it has robust defenses against chloride stress corrosion cracking, pitting, and crevice corrosion.
  • This grade boasts outstanding formability and weldability and remains non-magnetic in all conditions. Its austenitic structure provides exceptional toughness, even at cryogenic temperatures.
  • 904L stainless steel is enriched with significant amounts of nickel and molybdenum, both of which are premium elements. However, the advent of duplex stainless steel 2205 (S31803 or S32205) has led to a decline in the frequent use of 904L for many applications. Duplex 2205 offers comparable performance at a more economical cost, making it a preferred choice in various sectors previously dominated by 904L.

Corrosion Resistance:

  • 904L stainless steel was initially developed for its impressive resistance to sulfuric acid, and its resilience extends to a wide range of conditions. This material shows outstanding resistance in warm seawater and other high-chloride environments, boasting a Pitting Resistance Equivalent (PRE) of 35. Its high nickel content significantly enhances its resistance to stress corrosion cracking compared to standard austenitic grades. Copper inclusions further improve its durability against sulfuric and other reducing acids, especially in the challenging 'mid concentration' range.
  • The corrosion resistance of 904L is intermediate, bridging the gap between conventional austenitic grade 316L and the highly alloyed 'super austenitic' grades containing 6% molybdenum.
  • In comparison to molybdenum-free grades such as 304L and 310L, 904L demonstrates superior resistance to aggressive environments.
  • To achieve optimal resistance to stress corrosion cracking in demanding environments, 904L steel should undergo solution treatment after cold working.

Heat Resistance:

  • 904L stainless steel exhibits robust oxidation resistance. However, at elevated temperatures, it becomes structurally unstable due to the precipitation of brittle phases like sigma. It is not advisable to use 904L above 550°C. According to the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, the design stress values for 904L are set at 371°C.

Heat Treatment:

  • Solution Treatment (Annealing): Heat 904L steel to 1090-1175°C followed by rapid cooling. Note that this grade cannot be hardened through thermal treatment.

Welding:

  • 904L can be welded successfully using standard techniques. Due to its fully austenitic solidification, it is prone to heat cracking, especially in constrained weldments; thus, careful handling is essential. Pre-heating is not recommended, and post-weld heat treatment is generally unnecessary. Grade 904L rods and electrodes are prequalified by AS 1554.6 for welding.

Fabrication:

  • 904L is a high purity, low sulfur grade, and may not machine as easily as other grades designed for machinability. Nonetheless, it can be machined using conventional methods. Bending to a tight radius is feasible, typically done cold. Consideration should be given to annealing if the fabricated component will face severe stress corrosion cracking conditions, though this is usually unnecessary.

Typical Applications:

  • 904L stainless steel is ideal for processing plants handling sulfuric, phosphoric, and acetic acids, pulp and paper processing, gas scrubbing plants, seawater cooling equipment, oil refinery components, and wires in electrostatic precipitators.

Specified Properties:

  • As per ASTM A240M, specific properties are outlined for flat rolled products like plates, sheets, and coils. Other products, including pipes, tubes, and bars, have similar, though not identical, properties as listed in their respective specifications.

904L Stainless Steel Sheets in a Variety of Finishes

Our stainless steel sheets are available in various exquisite finishes: brushed finish, smooth 2B finish, or an 8K mirror finish, catering to diverse aesthetic and functional requirements.

Each stainless steel sheet we supply is film-coated on the finished side to protect against wear and marks during fabrication or installation. This protective film can be easily removed. The reverse side of the sheet remains unfinished.
