Type 201 stainless steel is an austenitic chromium-nickel-manganese alloy tailored to conserve nickel and serve as a cost-effective alternative to traditional Cr-Ni steels like 301 and 304. By substituting nickel with manganese and nitrogen, 201 grade achieves high tensile strength through cold working rather than heat treatment. While it is non-magnetic when annealed, it becomes magnetic after cold working. This mid-range stainless steel is ideal for appliances, cookers, sinks, kitchen utensils, catering equipment, automotive parts, fixtures, carriages, and window trims due to its structural integrity. However, its susceptibility to pitting and crevice corrosion from seawater limits its use in outdoor structural applications.
