CORROSION RESISTANCE:

  • Excels in withstanding corrosive attacks, surpassing any standard hardenable stainless steels.
  • Comparable to Alloy 304 in most media, offering robust protection.
  • Exhibits corrosion resistance in various industries, including chemical, petroleum, dairy, and food processing.
  • May be susceptible to crevice or pitting attacks if exposed to stagnant seawater for extended periods.

WELDABILITY:

  • Easily welded using most common fusion and resistance methods.
  • Not recommended for oxyacetylene welding.
  • Typically requires no pre-heating.
  • Inter-pass temperature should be limited to 248°F to maintain integrity.
  • Enhanced toughness in welds can be achieved following a complete heat treatment.

ELEVATED TEMPERATURE USE:

  • Demonstrates exceptional resistance to oxidation, up to approximately 1100°F.
  • Prolonged exposure to elevated temperatures may reduce toughness in precipitation-hardened conditions.

PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:

  • To forge, uniformly heat to 2150-2200°F and hold for 30 minutes per inch of section.
  • Ideal hot forming temperature range is 650-900°F while maintaining austenitic structure.
  • Re-heat treat forged pieces at 1875-1925°F to ensure optimal hardening conditions.
  • Cool forgings below 90°F to enhance grain refinement.

PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:

  • Alloy 17-4 is suitable for mild operations in its annealed (solution-treated) condition due to its hardness.
  • For more severe cold working, heat treat the material to condition H1150 to prevent cracking.
  • Bend radius often needs to exceed 7T.
  • Re-aging at the precipitation-hardening temperature post-cold forming enhances stress corrosion resistance.

MACHINABILITY:

  • Capable of being machined in both solution-treated and precipitation-hardening conditions.
