GENERAL PROPERTIES
- Grade 430 is a ferritic, straight chromium, non-hardenable stainless steel that offers an ideal blend of corrosion resistance and formability, along with practical mechanical properties. Thanks to its corrosion resistance, it finds widespread use in various chemical applications. However, it is most commonly employed in automobile trim and appliance components.
- Grade 430F is the free-machining variant of Grade 430, available in bar form for automatic screw machine operations. Grade 434 is the molybdenum-enhanced version of Grade 430, providing the same set of useful characteristics with added corrosion resistance due to the presence of molybdenum.
- ASTM A240/A240M defines the characteristics of Grade 430 for flat rolled products such as plates, sheets, and coils. Other product forms like forgings and bars may have similar but not identical qualities as per their respective specifications. The properties for Grade 430F in bar form are detailed in ASTM A582.

CORROSION RESISTANCE:
- Grade 430 boasts good resistance to a broad range of corrosive environments and some organic acids. Its highest corrosion resistance is achieved when polished or ground to a high finish. It offers comparable resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion as Grade 304. Like all ferritic grades, 430 has very high resistance to stress corrosion cracking.
- The non-free machining variant, Grade 430F, shows reduced resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, similar to other high sulfur free-machining grades.
HEAT RESISTANCE:
- Grade 430 can withstand oxidation up to 870°C in intermittent service and 815°C during continuous service. However, prolonged heating in the 400-600°C range may cause brittleness at room temperature, which can be alleviated through annealing.
HEAT TREATMENT:
- Solution Annealing - Heat to 815-845°C, hold for ½ hour per 25mm of thickness, then slow furnace cool to 600°C followed by rapid air cooling. Slow cooling from 540-400°C may cause embrittlement.
- Sub-Critical Anneal - Heat to 760-815°C, then air cool or water quench.
- This grade is not hardenable by thermal treatment.
WELDING:
- Pre-heat to 150-200°C if welding is necessary.
- To alleviate embrittlement in the weld metal and heat-affected zone, a post-weld anneal at 790-815°C is recommended.
- Grain refinement will not take place.
MACHINING:
- Machining this material is easier compared to standard austenitic grades such as 304.
- There is still a tendency for galling and pick-up on the cutting tool.
- Bars that are lightly drawn exhibit better machinability than those in the annealed condition.
- Grade 430F, the free-machining version of 430, offers significantly improved machinability.
FABRICATION:
- The lower work-hardening rate makes bending and forming somewhat easier than grade 304.
- However, lower ductility restricts very severe operations.
- For severe bends, ensure the bend axis is at right angles to the rolling direction.
- Severe cold heading of 430 wire is achievable.
