Heat Resistance
- As with other duplex stainless steels, Duplex 2205 maintains good oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures.
- However, caution is advised as exposure to temperatures above 572°F (300°C) can lead to embrittlement, even if exposure is brief. Hence, Duplex 2205 is not recommended for use above 572°F (300°C).
Welding Characteristics
- Duplex 2205 is known for its commendable weldability.
- Generally, welding without filler metal is discouraged to prevent excessive ferrite formation.
Heat Treatment
- The annealing temperature range for Duplex 2205 is between 1868 to 2012°F (1020 to 1100°C).
- While hardening by heat treatment is not possible, Duplex 2205 does exhibit work-hardening characteristics.
- Special attention is necessary to account for its higher coefficient of thermal expansion to avoid warping and distortion.
Processing - Hot Forming
Manufacturers typically recommend a maximum hot forming temperature range of 2010 to 2100°F (1100 to 1150°C). For non-compact shapes, the cooler edges pose a risk of cracking, warranting careful monitoring.
Processing - Cold Forming
Duplex 2205 showcases exceptional formability across diverse fabrications. Despite its impressive strength, the robust nature of Duplex 2205 can present challenges. Even with sufficient power, it necessitates allowances for increased spring-back due to its high strength.
MACHINABILITY
Machining Duplex stainless steel bar 2205 is somewhat more challenging compared to the 300 series austenitic stainless steel. It requires greater cutting forces and results in quicker tool wear. Here are some critical machining guidelines: A) Employ a powerful, rigid machine with a robust tool and workpiece mount; B) Minimize tool extensions to reduce vibration; C) Ensure the tool nose radius is only as long as necessary to maintain a sharp edge while ensuring adequate strength; D) Sequence machining operations to always cut below the work-hardened layer from previous operations.
