GENERAL PROPERTIES
- Grade 430 is a ferritic, straight chromium, non-hardenable grade that excels in combining outstanding corrosion resistance with impressive formability and mechanical properties. This grade's robust resistance makes it suitable for various chemical applications. Primarily, it is extensively used in automobile trim and appliance components, showcasing its versatility.
- Grade 430F is the free-machining variant of this grade, specifically available in bar form for automatic screw machines. Grade 434, enriched with molybdenum, shares the beneficial characteristics of Grade 430 while offering enhanced corrosion resistance due to its molybdenum component.
- ASTM A240/A240M outlines the specifications for 430 grade in flat rolled products such as plates, sheets, and coils. Other products like forgings and bars adhere to similar but distinct standards. For Grade 430F, the properties are defined for bar form in ASTM A582.

CORROSION RESISTANCE:
- Grade 430 material demonstrates robust resistance to a variety of corrosive environments, including some organic acids. Optimal corrosion resistance is attained when the material is highly polished or finely ground. Its resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion is comparable to grade 304, with very high resistance to stress corrosion cracking, a hallmark of all ferritic grades.
- The non-free machining grade, 430F, shows significantly lower resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, akin to other high sulfur free machining grades.
HEAT RESISTANCE:
- Grade 430 withstands oxidation in intermittent service up to 870°C and continuous service up to 815°C. Extended heating in the 400-600°C range may cause brittleness at room temperature, which can be mitigated through annealing.
HEAT TREATMENT:
- Solution Annealing - Heat to 815-845°C, maintain for 30 minutes per 25mm of thickness, followed by slow furnace cooling to 600°C and rapid air cooling. To avoid embrittlement, avoid slow cooling in the 540-400°C range.
- Sub-Critical Anneal - Heat to 760-815°C, followed by air cooling or water quenching.
- This grade cannot be hardened by thermal treatment.
WELDING:
- If welding is necessary, preheat at 150-200°C to ensure optimal results.
- To alleviate embrittlement in both the weld metal and the heat affected zone, a post-weld anneal at 790-815°C is recommended.
- Please note that grain refinement will not occur under these conditions.
MACHINING:
- Our product is easier to machine compared to standard austenitic grades like 304.
- However, there is still a tendency for galling and pick-up on the cutting tool.
- Lightly drawn bars are easier to machine than those in the annealed condition.
- Grade 430F, the free machining version of 430, offers significantly easier machinability.
FABRICATION:
- The lower work hardening rate of our product makes bending and forming easier compared to grade 304.
- However, lower ductility may restrict very severe operations.
- Severe bends should be performed with the bend axis at right angles to the rolling direction.
- Severe cold heading of 430 wire is achievable.
