SPECIFICATIONS
AMS 4928 - Bars, Forgings, and Forging Stock (Annealed)
AMS 4965 - Bars, Forgings (Solution Treated and Aged)
AMS 4967 - Bars, Forgings (Annealed, Heat Treatable)
HEAT TREATMENT
- For applications requiring high hardness, tensile strength, and fatigue resistance, annealing can be performed at 1,700-1,900°F (927 - 1,038°C).
The DAXUN 6-4™ Grade 5 alloy is versatile in its heat treatment options. - 1. Anneal: 1,275 - 1,400°F; (691 - 760°C), ½ to 2 hours, air or furnace cool.
- 2. Stress Relief Anneal: 1,000 - 1,200°F; (538 - 649°C), 1 to 8 hours, air or furnace cool.
- 3. Solution Heat Treat: 1,675 - 1,750°F; (913 - 954°C), 1 hour, water quench.
- 4. Aging: 975 - 1,025°F; (524 - 552°C), 4 to 8 hours - air cool.
In the solution treated and aged condition, the rapid quenching of small sections achieves optimum properties. However, larger section sizes or delayed quenching may result in suboptimal properties.
HARDNESS
Typically, in the annealed condition, the hardness is Rockwell C 30-34, and about Rockwell C 35-39 in the solution and aged condition.
Forgeability/Formability
- The Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar demonstrates excellent forgeability at 1,750°F; (954°C), with a final forging temperature of 1,450°F; (788°C). To achieve optimal properties, a minimum reduction of 35% is recommended.
- The Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar, known for its high strength, exhibits considerable resistance to forming at room temperature, even when annealed. To achieve severe forming operations like bending or stretching, the material must be heated up to 1,200°F (649°C) without compromising its mechanical integrity. For hot sizing or forming, creep forming is recommended within the range of 1,000 - 1,200°F (538 - 649°C).
Machinability
Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar can be precision-machined using austenitic stainless steel machining techniques. Employ slow machining speeds, high feeds, rigid tools, and copious amounts of non-chlorinated cutting fluids for optimal results.
Weldability
Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy rod is highly weldable whether annealed or in the solution and partially aged condition. Post-weld aging heat treatment enhances its properties. It's crucial to avoid contamination from oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen. Fusion welding should be done in an inert gas chamber or with inert gas shielding the molten metal and heated zones. Spot, seam, and flash welding can be performed without a protective atmosphere.
Special Considerations
Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 titanium alloy rod is susceptible to contamination from hydrogen during improper pickling and from oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon during forging, heat treating, and brazing. Such contamination reduces ductility, affecting notch sensitivity and forming capabilities.

Grade 2 Titanium Rod
Corrosion Resistance
Avoid using titanium with strong reducing acids, fluoride solutions, pure oxygen, or anhydrous ***.
General Corrosion
Grade 2 Titanium exhibits robust corrosion resistance in diverse environments. Refer to Table 1 for detailed general corrosion rates across various media. CP Titanium withstands a wide range of environments, including:
- Seawater and Brines
- Inorganic Salts
- Moist *** Gas
- Alkaline Solutions
- Oxidizing Acids
- Organics and Organic Acids
- Sulfur Compounds
Crevice Corrosion
CP Titanium demonstrates superior resistance to crevice corrosion in salt solutions compared to stainless steels. It remains unaffected by crevice corrosion at temperatures below 80°C (176°F), even under super chlorinated conditions.
Stress Corrosion Cracking
Grade 2 Titanium offers exceptional resistance to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in hot chloride solutions and is immune to SCC in seawater.
Erosion Corrosion
Titanium provides outstanding resistance to erosion in high-velocity environments.
Even in seawater with velocities reaching up to an impressive 130 ft/sec (40 m/sec), our material demonstrates negligible impact. The presence of abrasive particles, such as sand, has a minimal effect on corrosion, showcasing its robustness.
Hydrogen Embrittlement
Remarkably, titanium exhibits no significant absorption of hydrogen when exposed to seawater, even at elevated temperatures. Hydrogen absorption typically occurs only under three specific conditions:
- 1. The pH level is below 3 or above 12
- 2. The temperature exceeds 176°F (80°C)
- 3. There is a mechanism for hydrogen generation, such as a galvanic couple or an impressed current.
Bio-Corrosion
Titanium alloys showcase unique immunity to all forms of microbiologically influenced corrosion. While they do not display toxicity toward marine organisms, thus allowing biofouling in seawater, this can be efficiently minimized through chlorination or increased water velocity through heat exchangers.
Corrosion Fatigue
Unlike many other materials, titanium maintains its fatigue performance in the presence of seawater. Fatigue endurance limits and fatigue *** growth rates remain consistent, whether tested in air or seawater.
Galvanic Corrosion
In the galvanic series, titanium is positioned towards the noble end, near stainless steels, typically acting as the cathode when coupled with other metals. This positioning ensures titanium is not affected by galvanic corrosion but can accelerate the corrosion of coupled metals. When coupled with more noble metals, such as graphite, titanium's passivity is further enhanced.
Fatigue Properties
Grade 2 Titanium Rod stands out by not showing any degradation in fatigue properties when exposed to seawater. Both fatigue endurance limits and fatigue *** growth rates remain unchanged, whether tested in air or seawater.
Weldability
CP2 Grade Titanium Rod is highly weldable, provided the necessary precautions are taken. An inert gas shield must be used on both the OD and ID of the rod due to titanium's reactivity. The material must also be free from any grease or oil contamination.
Typically, Grade 2 Titanium Rod is welded using manual or automatic TIG welding, with or without filler wire. To minimize the heat-affected zone, low heat input should be utilized. Post-weld heat treatment of Titanium Rod is generally not required.
