Ti 6Al-4V (Grade 5 Titanium) is the most extensively used titanium alloy, representing over 50% of total titanium usage. Typically utilized in the annealed state, it can operate at temperatures up to 400°C (750°F). Ti 6Al/4V is weldable with matching or ELI filler wire. Compared to commercial pure titanium tubes, Ti 6Al/4V offers significantly higher strength and enhanced stiffness and thermal properties (excluding thermal conductivity). Its thermal conductivity is approximately 60% lower than CP titanium. Benefits of Grade 5 titanium seamless tubes include excellent formability, low density, and superior corrosion resistance. Additionally, they can be heat-treated to achieve optimal strength and performance.

This Grade 5 titanium alloy seamlessly merges unparalleled strength, exceptional corrosion resistance, superior weldability, and excellent machinability. Consequently, it finds extensive applications in diverse high-stakes environments such as military aircraft, the aviation industry, rocket components, precision-guided systems, armor parts, naval equipment, and military vacuum apparatus. Notably, the closely related 6-4 ELI variant is a preferred choice for surgical implants. Operating efficiently at temperatures up to 400°C, this alloy enhances ductility and toughness under cold working conditions, while offering outstanding specific strength. Typically supplied in an annealed condition, it can be easily heat-treated to elevate strength for various applications. Renowned as a versatile titanium alloy, Ti 6Al-4V seamless tubes boast a spectrum of ideal properties across a temperature range of -210°C to 400°C. Grade 5 titanium alloy tubes stand out as the most commercialized of all titanium alloys, seamlessly blending high strength with remarkable toughness. These tubes also possess excellent welding and processing attributes.

  • Titanium Alloy - (UNS R56400)

INTRODUCTION

  • DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 Alloy Tube (UNS R56400) stands as the pinnacle of titanium alloys. This duplex alpha+beta titanium alloy, adeptly stabilized with aluminum and vanadium, showcases exceptional high-strength properties. It remains robust even at cryogenic temperatures, approximately 800°F (427°C). Utilized extensively in annealing, solution treatment, and aging processes, this alloy finds pivotal applications in jet engine compressor blades, discs, and rings; fuselage and space capsule components; pressure vessels; *** casings; helicopter rotor hubs; essential fasteners; and high-strength-to-weight ratio forgings.
  • The creation of this alloy involves initial melting through vacuum arc (VAR), electron beam (EB), or plasma arc hearth melting (PAM) techniques, followed by one or two vacuum arc remelting steps.

SPECIFICATIONS

• ASTM B338 - Heat-treatable Titanium Tubes Standard
• AMS 4928 - Forgings and Forging Stock (Annealed)

  • In the solution treated and aged condition, optimal properties are achieved in small cross sections that are rapidly quenched.
Larger section sizes and/or delays in quenching can result in properties that are suboptimal.

HARDNESS

Typical hardness values range from Rockwell C 30-34 in the annealed condition to Rockwell C 35-39 in the solution and aged condition.

FORGEABILITY/ FORMABILITY

  • DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy tubes are forged at 1,750°F (954°C), with an end forging temperature of 1,450°F (788°C). For optimal forging results, a reduction of at least 35% is recommended.
  • DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy presents significant challenges in forming at room temperature, even when annealed. However, it allows for extreme forming operations, such as bending or stretching, at elevated temperatures up to 1,200°F (649°C) without compromising its mechanical properties. For hot sizing or forming, creep forming is effective within a temperature range of 1,000 to 1,200°F (538 to 649°C).

MACHINABILITY

  • DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy can be machined using techniques suitable for austenitic stainless steels, involving slow speeds, heavy feeds, and rigid setups.
Tooling should be robust, and a substantial volume of non-chlorinated cutting fluid is recommended.

WELDABILITY

  • DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V Grade 5 Alloy Titanium Tube exhibits excellent weldability in both annealed and solution and partially aged conditions, with aging conducted during post-weld heat treatment.
  • It is crucial to avoid contamination from oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen. Fusion welding can be achieved in an inert gas-filled chamber or with an inert gas tail shield for the molten metal and adjacent hot zone. Additionally, spot welding, seam welding, and flash welding can be performed without a protective environment.

SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS

  • DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy is susceptible to hydrogen contamination from improper pickling and can absorb oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon during processes like forging, heat treatment, and brazing. Such contamination can reduce ductility, impacting notch sensitivity and forming capabilities.

Ti-6Al-4V Titanium Pipe - Grade 5 Titanium Tube

Titanium Alloy - (UNS R56400)
Introduction
DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V Titanium Tube, Grade 5 (UNS R56400) stands out as the most widely used titanium alloy. This duplex alpha+beta titanium alloy employs aluminum as the alpha stabilizer and vanadium as the beta stabilizer. Boasting high strength, it is effective even at low temperatures around 800°F (427°C). DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy is ideal for annealing, solution treating, and aging processes. Its applications extend to compressor blades, disks, and rings for jet engines, fuselage and space capsule components, pressure vessels, *** cases, helicopter rotor hubs, fasteners, and critical forgings requiring a high strength-to-weight ratio.
This alloy is initially fabricated through vacuum arc (VAR), electron beam (EB), or plasma arc hearth melting (PAM). Subsequent remelting is carried out through one or two vacuum arc steps.
Specifications
• ASTM B338 - Standard Heat Treatable Titanium Tube
• AMS 4928 - Forgings and Forging Stock (Annealed)
• AMS 4965 - Forgings (Solution Treated and Aged)
• AMS 4967 - Forgings (Annealed, Heat Treatable)

Physical Properties

Ti-6Al-4V Titanium Tube Melting Range: 2,800-3,000°F (1,538 - 1,649°C)
Density: 0.160 lb/in3; 4.47 g/cm3
Beta Transus Temperature: 1830°F (± 25°); 999°C (± 14°)

Heat Treatment

Annealing is performed at temperatures of 1,700-1,900°F (927 - 1,038°C) when high hardness, tensile strength, and fatigue strength are critical.
DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V Grade 5 Titanium Tube supports diverse heat treatment methods to suit various requirements.
1. **Annealing**: Achieve optimal material properties with a controlled annealing process at temperatures ranging from **1,275 - 1,400°F** (691 - 760°C) for **½ to 2 hours**. Upon completion, allow the material to air cool or use a furnace to ensure uniform cooling.
2. **Stress Relief Annealing**: Enhance the durability of your titanium tube with stress relief annealing at **1,000 - 1,200°F** (538 - 649°C) for a period of **1 to 8 hours**. Post-process cooling can be achieved through air or furnace methods.
3. **Solution Heat Treating**: For superior mechanical properties, implement solution heat treating at **1,675 - 1,750°F** (913 - 954°C) for precisely **1 hour**, followed by an immediate water quench.
