CORROSION RESISTANCE:
316L Stainless Steel Rod
- Boasting superior resistance compared to 304, the 316L stainless steel rod excels in various atmospheric conditions and withstands numerous corrosive environments, thanks to its enhanced chromium content.
Augmented with molybdenum, this alloy offers increased durability. - However, it remains susceptible to pitting and crevice corrosion in warm chloride environments and stress corrosion cracking above approximately 122°F (50°C).
- The rod is considered resilient against potable water containing up to around 1000mg/L chlorides at ambient temperatures, though this resistance decreases to about 500mg/L at 140°F (60°C).
140°F (60°C). - Frequently referred to as the 'marine grade stainless steel', it should be noted that it is not impervious to warm seawater.
HEAT RESISTANCE:
- Exhibiting excellent oxidation resistance, the 316L stainless steel rod can endure intermittent service up to 1600°F (870°C) and continuous service up to 1700°F (925°C).
- Grade 316L surpasses others in resistance to carbide precipitation.
WELDING CHARACTERISTICS:
- The 316L stainless steel rod demonstrates exceptional weldability through all standard fusion methods, with or without filler metals.
- While heavy welded sections of Grade 316 necessitate post-weld annealing for optimal corrosion resistance, this step is not required for Grade 316L.
HEAT TREATMENT:
- The ideal annealing temperature range spans from 1900 to 2100°F (1038 to 1149°C).
- Note that the material cannot be hardened through heat treatment.
- Special measures must be taken to accommodate a higher coefficient of thermal expansion to prevent warping and distortion.
PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:
- Manufacturers recommend a maximum forging temperature between 2100°F and 2300°F.
- Avoid forging below 1700°F (927°C).
- Optimal corrosion resistance is achieved if the forgings undergo a final anneal.
PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:
- Exceptionally tough and ductile, 316/316L stainless steel rod types can be easily cold worked, including processes like roll forming, swaging, cold heading, and deep drawing.
They can also be bent without difficulty. - Severely cold-formed parts should be annealed to alleviate stresses.
MACHINEABILITY:
- Machining Type 316/316L Stainless Steel Rod is somewhat more challenging than Type 304 due to its toughness.
- The material machines with tough and strong chip characteristics.
- Using chip breakers and curlers is recommended.
- Optimal results are achieved using large tools and abundant cutting fluid.
- Consider heavy positive feeds at low speeds as 316/316L work hardens rapidly.
