Duplex 2205, a remarkable two-phase ferritic-austenitic stainless steel, is alloyed with 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum, and 5-6% nickel. Renowned as the most commonly used duplex stainless steel grade, it boasts a yield strength that doubles that of standard austenitic grades. Duplex 2205 excels with exceptional fatigue strength and outstanding resistance to stress corrosion cracking, crevice, pitting, erosion, and general corrosion, even in the harshest conditions.

CORROSION RESISTANCE

HEAT RESISTANCE

WELDING CHARACTERISTICS

  • Duplex 2205 is notable for its good weldability.
  • It is not generally recommended to weld without filler metal, as this may lead to excessive ferrite formation.

HEAT TREATMENT

  • The annealing temperature range for Duplex 2205 is between 1868 to 2012°F (1020 to 1100°C).
  • While it cannot be hardened by heat treatment, Duplex 2205 is known to work-harden.
  • Special considerations are necessary to accommodate its higher coefficient of thermal expansion to prevent warping and distortion.

PROCESSING - HOT FORMING

  • Duplex 2205 producers recommend hot forming at a maximum temperature range of 2010 to 2100°F (1100 to 1150°C). For non-compact workpieces, cooler edges may increase the risk of cracking.

PROCESSING - COLD FORMING

  • Duplex 2205 stands out for its exceptional formability across various fabrications. However, its high strength can introduce challenges. Even with robust equipment, one must account for the increased spring-back due to the grade's superior strength.

MACHINABILITY

Processing Duplex 2205 is a bit more challenging than the 300 series austenitic stainless steels. It necessitates higher cutting forces, leading to faster tool wear. Suggested machining guidelines include: A) Employ powerful, rigid machines with extremely strong, rigid mounts for tools and workpieces, B) Minimize vibration by keeping tool extensions as short as possible, C) Utilize a nose radius on tools no longer than necessary, ensuring sharp edges for carbides while maintaining adequate strength, and D) Design machining sequences to ensure a depth of cut below the work-hardened layer from previous passes.

  • Type 2205 is a duplex stainless steel alloy, combining austenitic and ferritic phases, with added chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen for enhanced performance and corrosion resistance compared to 304 and 316 stainless steel. Its dispersed austenite/ferrite microstructure, along with alloying additives, provides excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking, pitting, and ***-induced crevice corrosion. Alloy 2205 is oxidation-resistant up to 980°C, but care is needed for extended durations at 300°C to 1000°C to prevent brittleness. Available in strip, coil, and sheet forms, Type 2205 is versatile for many applications.

What are the Commonly Used Surfaces of Stainless Steel Coils?

The surface finish of 201 stainless steel coil can vary based on cold rolling methods and post-rolling surface treatments. Common surface treatments include NO.1, 2B, 4, HL, 6, 8, BA, TR hard, heavy rolling bright 2H, polished bright, among others:

  • NO.1: This surface is achieved after hot rolling, heat treatment, and pickling, which removes the black oxide scale formed during these processes. NO.1 surface ranks first in surface treatments and is silvery white with a matte finish. It's typically used in heat-resistant and corrosion-resistant industries that don't require high surface gloss, such as the alcohol industry, chemical industry, and for large containers.
  • 2B: The 2B surface is smoother than the 2D surface, achieved by a light rolling process that imparts a brighter finish. The surface roughness Ra value ranges from 0.1 to 0.5μm. This adaptable surface is suitable for chemical, papermaking, petroleum, medical industries, and a variety of applications including building curtain walls.
  • TR Hard Surface: TR stainless steel, also known as hard steel, includes grades like 304 and 301. It's used for high-strength, high-hardness applications such as railway vehicles, conveyor belts, springs, and washers. Utilizing the work hardening characteristics of austenitic stainless steel, TR hard surface steel plates are strengthened and hardened through cold rolling without subsequent annealing. This process produces a hard surface with superior strength and hardness.
  • Re-rolled Bright 2H: Post the rolling operation, the stainless steel strip undergoes a bright annealing treatment. Utilizing a continuous annealing line ensures rapid cooling of the strip, which travels at an impressive speed of 60-80m/min. This meticulous process bestows the strip with a lustrous 2H re-rolled bright surface finish, elevating its aesthetic and functional qualities.
  • No. 4: The No. 4 surface finish exudes a superior polishing effect, surpassing the brightness of No. 3. Achieved by polishing cold-rolled stainless steel plates with a 2D or 2B surface, followed by a sanding belt with a particle size of 150-180#. The surface roughness (Ra) is meticulously measured between 0.2 and 1.5μm. This versatile surface is extensively utilized in high-demand sectors such as restaurants, cooking equipment, medical facilities, architectural decoration, and containers.
  • HL: The HL surface, commonly referred to as a hairline finish, is specified in the Japanese JIS standard as a continuous hairline abrasive surface created by polishing with a 150-240# abrasive belt. The Chinese GB3280 standard provides less clarity. This sophisticated finish is predominantly employed in architectural decoration for elevators, escalators, and exterior walls, offering both aesthetic appeal and durability.
  • No. 6: Building on the foundation of No. 4, the No. 6 surface is further enhanced with a Tampico brush or a W63 grit abrasive material per the GB2477 standard. This surface offers a refined metallic luster, softness, minimal reflection, and no imaging, making it perfect for curtain walls, tassel decorations, and premium cooking supplies.
  • BA: The BA surface is exceptionally bright due to heat treatment after cold rolling. Conducted in a protective atmosphere to prevent oxidation, this process retains the gloss of the cold-rolled surface. Post-treatment, the surface is polished with a high-precision smooth roller to amplify its brightness, achieving surface roughness of 0.05-0.1μm, nearing mirror quality. BA surfaces are ideal for diverse applications such as food utensils, household appliances, medical equipment, automotive parts, and decorative items.
  • No. 8: Renowned for its mirror-like finish with maximum reflectivity and no abrasive particles, the No. 8 surface, also known as 8K board in the industry.
