SPECIFICATIONS
AMS 4928 - Bars, Forgings, and Forging Stock (Annealed)
AMS 4965 - Bars, Forgings (Solution Treated and Aged)
AMS 4967 - Bars, Forgings (Annealed, Heat Treatable)
HEAT TREATMENT
- For high hardness, tensile strength, and fatigue strength, perform annealing at 1,700-1,900°F (927 - 1,038°C).
DAXUN 6-4™ Grade 5 alloy is versatile in heat treatment methods. - 1. Anneal: 1,275 -1,400°F (691 - 760°C), ½ to 2 hours, air or furnace cool.
- 2. Stress Relief Anneal: 1,000 -1,200°F (538 - 649°C), 1 to 8 hours, air or furnace cool.
- 3. Solution Heat Treat: 1,675 -1,750°F (913 - 954°C), 1 hour, water quench.
- 4. Aging: 975 -1,025°F (524 - 552°C), 4 to 8 hours - air cool.
Rapid quenching of small sections in the solution treated and aged condition yields optimal properties. Larger sections or delayed quenching may yield less optimal results.
HARDNESS
Typical hardness in the annealed condition ranges from Rockwell C 30-34, and Rockwell C 35-39 in the solution treated and aged condition.
Forgeability/Formability
- The Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar achieves optimal properties when forged at 1,750°F (954°C) with a final forging temperature of 1,450°F (788°C). To attain these superior characteristics, a minimum of 35% reduction is highly recommended.
- Forming the Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar at room temperature is challenging, even in its annealed state. However, for intensive forming operations like bending or stretching, the material can be handled at temperatures up to 1,200°F (649°C) without compromising mechanical integrity. Additionally, hot sizing and forming are feasible through creep forming within a temperature range of 1,000 - 1,200°F (538 - 649°C).
Machinability
The Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar can be efficiently machined using austenitic stainless steel machining techniques, which involve slow speeds, high feeds, and rigid tooling. Ample amounts of non-chlorinated cutting fluids are essential to ensure a smooth machining process.
Weldability
Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy rod is highly weldable in both annealed and solution-partially aged conditions, with aging performed during post-weld heat treatment. Strict precautions are required to avoid contamination from oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen. Fusion welding should be done in an inert gas environment to protect the molten metal and heated zones. Spot, seam, and flash welding can be conducted without a protective atmosphere.
Special Considerations
The Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 titanium alloy rod is susceptible to contamination by hydrogen during improper pickling and by oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon during processes like forging, heat treating, and brazing. Such contamination can reduce ductility, adversely affecting notch sensitivity and forming properties.

Grade 2 Titanium Rod
Corrosion Resistance
Titanium should be avoided with strong reducing acids, fluoride solutions, pure oxygen, or anhydrous ***.
General Corrosion
The general corrosion rates for Grade 2 Titanium across various media are displayed in Table 1. CP Titanium demonstrates excellent corrosion resistance in diverse environments, including:
- Seawater and Brines
- Inorganic Salts
- Moist *** Gas
- Alkaline Solutions
- Oxidizing Acids
- Organics and Organic Acids
- Sulfur Compounds
Crevice Corrosion
CP Titanium boasts robust resistance to crevice corrosion in salt solutions compared to stainless steels. CP Titanium remains unaffected by crevice corrosion below 80°C (176°F), irrespective of pH levels, even in highly chlorinated conditions.
Stress Corrosion Cracking
Grade 2 Titanium offers superior resistance to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in hot chloride solutions and is immune to SCC in seawater.
Erosion Corrosion
Titanium exhibits exceptional resistance to erosion in flowing environments.
In seawater with velocities up to 130 ft/sec (40 m/sec), the impact on titanium is minimal, even when abrasive particles like sand are present.
Hydrogen Embrittlement
Titanium does not significantly absorb hydrogen when exposed to seawater, even at elevated temperatures. Hydrogen absorption typically requires three conditions:
- A pH level of < 3 or > 12
- Temperatures exceeding 176°F (80°C)
- A mechanism for hydrogen generation, such as a galvanic couple or impressed current.
Bio-Corrosion
Titanium alloys demonstrate unique immunity to microbiologically influenced corrosion. However, they can experience biofouling in seawater, which can be minimized by chlorination or increasing water velocity through heat exchangers.
Corrosion Fatigue
Titanium maintains its fatigue performance in seawater, with no reduction in endurance or increased *** growth rates compared to air.
Galvanic Corrosion
In the galvanic series, titanium is near stainless steel and usually acts as the cathode, avoiding galvanic corrosion but potentially accelerating other metals' corrosion. Coupling titanium with more noble metals enhances its passivity.
Fatigue Properties
Grade 2 Titanium Rod retains its fatigue properties in seawater, showing consistent endurance limits and *** growth rates in both air and seawater.
Weldability
CP2 Grade Titanium Rod is highly weldable with appropriate precautions. An inert gas shield is essential due to titanium's reactivity, and the rod must be free of grease or oil.
Typically, Grade 2 Titanium Rod is welded using manual or automatic TIG welding, with or without filler wire, using low heat input to minimize the heat-affected zone. Post-weld heat treatment is not usually necessary.
