Technical Specifications
AMS 4928 - Bars, Forgings, and Forging Stock (Annealed)
AMS 4965 - Bars, Forgings (Solution treated and aged)
AMS 4967 - Bars, Forgings (Annealed, Heat Treatable)
Advanced Heat Treatment Options
- For applications requiring high hardness, tensile strength, and fatigue strength, annealing can be performed at 1,700-1,900°F (927 - 1,038°C).
Our DAXUN 6-4™ Grade 5 alloy can undergo various heat treatment processes. - 1. Anneal: 1,275 -1,400°F (691 - 760°C), ½ to 2 hours, air or furnace cool.
- 2. Stress Relief Anneal: 1,000 -1,200°F (538 - 649°C), 1 to 8 hours, air or furnace cool.
- 3. Solution Heat Treat: 1,675 -1,750°F (913 - 954°C), 1 hour, water quench.
- 4. Aging: 975 -1,025°F (524 - 552°C), 4 to 8 hours - air cool.
For optimum properties in the solution treated and aged condition, rapid quenching of smaller sections is ideal. Larger sections or delayed quenching may yield less than optimal properties.
Hardness Parameters
Typical hardness in the annealed condition is Rockwell C 30-34, and Rockwell C 35-39 in the solution and aged condition.
Forgeability and Formability
- Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar is optimally forged at 1,750°F (954°C) with a final forging temperature of 1,450°F (788°C). A minimum of 35% reduction is recommended to achieve optimum properties.
- The Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar, renowned for its formidable strength, presents challenges in forming at room temperature, even when annealed. However, severe forming processes, such as bending or stretching, are feasible on annealed material at elevated temperatures up to 1,200°F (649°C) without compromising mechanical integrity. For hot sizing or forming, consider creep forming within 1,000 to 1,200°F (538 - 649°C).
Machinability
The Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar boasts exceptional machinability when utilizing austenitic stainless steel machining techniques. Employ slow machining speeds, high feeds, rigid tools, and copious amounts of non-chlorinated cutting fluids for optimal results.
Weldability
The Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy rod excels in weldability whether in the annealed state or the solution and partially aged condition, with subsequent aging during post-weld heat treatment. To prevent contamination from oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen, precautions are essential. Fusion welding is best performed in an inert gas chamber or with inert gas shielding for the molten metal and adjacent heated zones. Spot, seam, and flash welding are achievable without a protective atmosphere.
Special Considerations
The Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 titanium alloy rod is susceptible to contamination from hydrogen during improper pickling and oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon during forging, heat treating, and brazing. Such contamination can degrade ductility, negatively impacting notch sensitivity and forming characteristics.

Grade 2 Titanium Rod: Unmatched quality for demanding applications.
Corrosion Resistance: Robust performance in diverse environments.
Avoid using titanium with strong reducing acids, fluoride solutions, pure oxygen, or anhydrous *** due to compatibility issues.
General Corrosion: Exceptional resistance across various media.
The general corrosion rates for Grade 2 titanium across different media are detailed in Table 1. CP titanium offers excellent corrosion resistance in numerous environments, including:
- Seawater and Brines: Superior resistance for marine applications.
- Inorganic Salts: Reliable performance in challenging conditions.
- Moist *** Gas: Durable even in corrosive atmospheres.
- Alkaline Solutions: Strong resistance to alkaline corrosion.
- Oxidizing Acids: Exceptional durability with oxidizing agents.
- Organics and Organic Acids: Reliable in organic chemical environments.
- Sulfur Compounds: Robust performance in sulfur-rich conditions.
Crevice Corrosion: Superior resistance compared to stainless steels.
CP titanium demonstrates excellent resistance to crevice corrosion in salt solutions, outperforming stainless steels. It remains unaffected by crevice corrosion at temperatures below 80 °C (176°F), regardless of pH, even in highly chlorinated conditions.
Stress Corrosion Cracking: Outstanding SCC resistance.
Grade 2 titanium exhibits excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in hot chloride solutions and is immune to SCC in seawater.
Erosion Corrosion: Exceptional resistance in dynamic environments.
Titanium showcases superior resistance to erosion in flowing conditions, ensuring longevity and performance.
Titanium alloys can withstand seawater velocities up to 130 ft/sec (40 m/sec) with negligible material impact. Even the presence of abrasive particles like sand only slightly affects corrosion, showcasing the robust nature of titanium in marine environments.
Hydrogen Embrittlement
Titanium exhibits no significant hydrogen absorption when exposed to seawater, even at elevated temperatures. Hydrogen absorption in titanium typically occurs only under the following specific conditions:
- 1. The pH is less than 3 or greater than 12.
- 2. The temperature exceeds 176°F (80°C).
- 3. A mechanism for hydrogen generation is present, such as a galvanic couple or impressed current.
Bio-Corrosion
Titanium alloys uniquely resist all forms of microbiologically influenced corrosion. Although not toxic to marine organisms, biofouling can occur in seawater. Mitigation strategies include chlorination or increasing water velocity through heat exchangers, ensuring minimal bio-corrosion.
Corrosion Fatigue
Unlike many other materials, titanium maintains its fatigue performance in seawater. Both fatigue endurance limits and fatigue *** growth rates remain consistent, whether tested in air or seawater, ensuring reliability in marine applications.
Galvanic Corrosion
In the galvanic series, titanium is positioned near the noble end, close to stainless steels, and typically acts as the cathode when paired with other metals. This positioning means titanium resists galvanic corrosion but may accelerate corrosion in the coupled metal. Pairing titanium with more noble metals, such as graphite, enhances its passivity and protective qualities.
Fatigue Properties
Grade 2 Titanium Rods exhibit consistent fatigue properties, unaffected by the presence of seawater. Fatigue endurance limits and fatigue *** growth rates remain stable, making them an excellent choice for demanding marine environments.
Weldability
CP2 Grade Titanium Rods offer excellent weldability, provided proper precautions are taken. Given titanium's reactive nature, an inert gas shield must be applied both outside (OD) and inside (ID) the rod. The material must also be free from any grease or oil contamination to ensure a successful weld.
Grade 2 Titanium Rods are typically welded using manual or automatic TIG welding, with or without filler wire. To minimize the heat-affected zone, low heat input should be utilized. Post-weld heat treatments are not commonly performed on Titanium Rods.
