Grade 409 is a stabilized ferritic general-purpose stainless steel tube infused with 11% chromium, making it an ideal choice for applications demanding oxidation or corrosion resistance where carbon steel and some coated steels fall short. The 409 tube boasts formidable oxidation resistance and impressive formability; however, its lower chromium content results in moderate corrosion resistance compared to grades 304, 430, or 439, but superior performance over mild steel. This versatile tube can be roll-formed, stretch-bent, deep-drawn, or press-formed. Post-annealing, the 409 tube remains unhardened when cold treated using processes like warm and roll forming, such as press or stretch bending. While it offers decent weldability, it is unsuitable for shock-loaded structures due to grain growth in the heat-affected zone, impacting mechanical quality. Widely utilized in automotive exhaust systems, the 409 tube shines in its mechanical properties, making it a favorite in automotive and agricultural industries. It excels in resisting corrosion from exhaust gases and high temperatures. However, its mechanical virtues outweigh its aesthetic appeal, making it less suited for decorative purposes.
