CORROSION RESISTANCE:
- 17-4 pH Stainless Steel Round Bar exhibits superior resistance against corrosive attacks, outperforming standard hardenable stainless steels.
- Comparable to the renowned Alloy 304 in most environments.
- Boasting excellent corrosion resistance, especially in chemical, petroleum, dairy, and food processing industries.
- Please note: Prolonged exposure to stagnant sea water may lead to crevice or pitting attacks.
WELDABILITY:
- Easily welded using most common fusion and resistance methods for optimal results.
- Oxyacetylene welding is not recommended.
- No pre-heating generally required prior to welding.
- Maintain inter-pass temperatures below 248°F to ensure quality.
- Achieve superior toughness in welds post-complete heat treatment.
ELEVATED TEMPERATURE USE:
- Exhibits exceptional oxidation resistance up to approximately 1100°F.
- Extended exposure to high temperatures may reduce toughness in precipitation-hardened conditions.
PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:
- For forging, uniformly heat to 2150-2200°F, holding for half an hour per inch.
- Optimum hot forming temperatures range between 650-900°F while steel remains austenitic.
- Re-heat treatment at 1875-1925°F is essential for ideal hardening conditions in forgings.
- Cool forged pieces below 90°F to ensure fine grain structure.
PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:
- Due to its hardness in the annealed state, Alloy 17-4 is suited to mild operations in cold forming.
- For severe cold working, treat the material to condition H1150 to minimize cracking risks.
- Typically, a bend radius exceeding 7T is required.
- To enhance stress corrosion resistance post-cold forming, re-aging at the precipitation-hardening temperature is advised.
MACHINABILITY:
- Capable of being machined in both solution-treated and precipitation-hardened conditions.
