316/316L stainless steel alloy is an austenitic stainless steel pipe enriched with molybdenum, which significantly enhances its overall corrosion resistance compared to 304, especially against pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments. Additionally, the 316/316L seamless pipe is known for its outstanding high-temperature tensile strength, creep resistance, stress-rupture strength, formability, and weldability. The 316L variant, being a low carbon form of 316, resists sensitization, making it ideal for large welded components.

CORROSION RESISTANCE:

• Exhibits superior resistance compared to 304 in diverse atmospheric environments and various corrosive media, thanks to elevated chromium
  and molybdenum levels.
• Prone to pitting and crevice corrosion in warm chloride environments; susceptible to stress corrosion cracking beyond 122°F (50°C).
• Resistant to potable water containing up to 1000mg/L chlorides at ambient temperatures, decreasing to 500mg/L at
  140°F (60°C).
• Renowned as the 'marine grade stainless steel,' yet not resistant to warm sea water.

HEAT RESISTANCE:

• Offers excellent oxidation resistance up to 1600°F (870°C) intermittently and 1700°F (925°C) continuously.
• Grade 316L displays superior resistance to carbide precipitation.

WELDING CHARACTERISTICS:

• Boasts excellent weldability through all standard fusion techniques, with or without filler metals.
• For optimal corrosion resistance, thick welded sections of Grade 316 should undergo post-weld annealing, whereas this step is unnecessary for Grade 316L.

HEAT TREATMENT:

• Annealing temperature ranges between 1900 to 2100°F (1038 to 1149°C).
• Cannot be hardened via heat treatment.
• Due to a higher coefficient of thermal expansion, special measures are required to prevent warping and distortion.

PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:

• Most manufacturers recommend a maximum forging temperature between 2100°F and 2300°F.
• Avoid forging below 1700°F (927°C).
• Final anneal ensures optimal corrosion resistance of the forgings.

PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:

• 316/316L types are highly tough and ductile, enabling easy cold working processes such as roll forming, swaging, cold heading, deep drawing, and
  bending.
• Severely cold-formed parts should be annealed to relieve stresses.

MACHINEABILITY:

• 316/316L is slightly more challenging to machine than 304 due to its toughness.
• Produces chips that are strong and tough.
• Use chip breakers and curlers.
• Employ large tools and abundant cutting fluid.
• Consider heavy positive feeds at low speeds due to the rapid work-hardening of 316/316L.
