CORROSION RESISTANCE:

• Generally more resistant than 304 in a wide range of atmospheric environments and various corrosive media, thanks to the enhanced chromium
  and molybdenum content.
• Susceptible to pitting and crevice corrosion in warm chloride environments, and to stress corrosion cracking at temperatures above 122°F (50°C).
• Deemed resistant to potable water with chlorides up to approximately 1000 mg/L at ambient temperatures, decreasing to about 500 mg/L at
  140°F (60°C).
• Commonly referred to as the 'marine grade stainless steel' - though not resistant to warm seawater.

HEAT RESISTANCE:

• Exhibits excellent oxidation resistance in intermittent service up to 1600°F (870°C) and in continuous service up to 1700°F (925°C).
• Grade 316L offers superior resistance to carbide precipitation.

WELDING CHARACTERISTICS:

• Outstanding weldability using all standard fusion methods, with or without filler metals.
• Heavy welded sections in Grade 316 require post-weld annealing for optimal corrosion resistance, which is not necessary for grade 316L.

HEAT TREATMENT:

• Annealing temperature range is between 1900 and 2100°F (1038 to 1149°C).
• Cannot be hardened through heat treatment.
• Special attention is required to account for a higher coefficient of thermal expansion to prevent warping and distortion.

PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:

• Most manufacturers recommend a maximum forging temperature ranging from 2100°F to 2300°F.
• Avoid forging below 1700°F (927°C). The best
• corrosion resistance is achieved if the forgings undergo a final anneal.

PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:

• 316/316L types, being exceptionally tough and ductile, can be easily cold worked through processes like roll forming, swaging, cold heading, deep drawing,
  bending, etc., without difficulty.
• Severely cold-formed parts should be annealed to alleviate stresses.

MACHINABILITY:

• Type 316/316L is somewhat more challenging to machine compared to Type 304 due to its toughness.
• 316/316L generates tough and strong chip characteristics during machining.
• Chip breakers and curlers are recommended.
• Utilize the largest tool possible along with substantial amounts of cutting fluid.
• Consider heavy positive feeds at low speeds since 316/316L work hardens quickly.
