Grade 409
- Grade 409 is titanium-stabilized ferritic stainless steel. Grade 409, a general-purpose chromium stainless steel, is mostly used for automotive exhaust systems. This material is suitable for applications that prioritize mechanical qualities, corrosion resistance, and weldability over appearance, especially at high temperatures.
- ASTM requirements, including ASTM A240M for flat rolled steel, now use S40910, S40920, and S40930 as "sub-grades" instead of generic grade 409.
- These are stabilised to varying degrees with titanium, niobium, or a combination of the two.Any of these could be certified as S40900 (Grade 409). ASTM A268M only lists standard Grade 409 for covering tubes.
Corrosion Resistance:
- Grade 409 is resistant to both atmospheric and exhaust gas corrosion. In most environments, a light surface rust develops, which prevents further corrosion but is not suitable for cosmetic purposes. Corrosion resistance is comparable to 3CR12 and 12% chromium martensitic grades (410), but lower than 17% chromium grade 430.
Heat resistance
- 409 is resistant to scaling in intermittent service up to 815°C and continuous service up to 675°C. However, these temperatures vary according on the specific service environment.
Heat Treatment
- Annealing Heat to 790-900 degrees Celsius and then cool with air. This grade cannot be toughened through heat treatment.
Welding
- Easy to weld, however a pre-heat of 150-260°C is suggested. Although Grade 409 or Grade 430 electrodes or filler rods can be used, welding using Grade 309 rods or electrodes is pre-qualified per AS 1554.6. These austenitic fillers produce a more ductile weld.
- Post-weld annealing at 760-815°C increases weld ductility.
Welding tiny sections does not require post-weld annealing. Automotive exhaust tubing is usually welded without filler metal (autogenously).
To avoid the impacts of grain formation, all welding must be done with as little heat as possible.

Automotive exhaust systems, such as catalytic converters and mufflers.
Specified Properties
- ASTM A268M specifies the parameters of Grade 409 for annealed tubing. ASTM A240M specifies the composition of additional grades for coil and sheet applications. Other items' specifications may include similar but not identical properties.
FORMING:
- 409 stainless can be cut, blanked stretch formed and drawn without difficulty. The formability characteristics of Type 409 are very similar to carbon steel.
