Grade 409 is a stabilized ferritic general-purpose stainless steel tube with 11% chromium content. This unique composition makes it ideal for applications that demand superior oxidation and corrosion resistance, outstripping the capabilities of carbon steel and certain coated steels. Although 409 boasts excellent oxidation resistance and formability, its lower chromium concentration affords it limited corrosion resistance compared to grades 304, 430, or 439. Nevertheless, it performs significantly better than mild steel. The versatility of 409 allows for diverse forming techniques such as roll forming, stretch bending, deep drawing, and press forming. Post-annealing ensures that 409 remains malleable, even under cold treatment via warm and roll forming methods including press or stretch bending. While its weldability is fair, caution is advised in shock-loaded structures due to grain growth in the heat-affected zone, impacting mechanical integrity. Predominantly, 409 finds its application in automotive exhaust system tubing and stampings. The mechanical properties of this stainless steel are highly advantageous in the automotive and agricultural sectors, offering robust resistance to exhaust gas corrosion and high-temperature conditions. Despite its mechanical prowess, the aesthetic appeal of 409 is secondary, and it is not recommended for decorative use.
