The alloy's dispersed austenitic/ferritic microstructure, combined with alloying elements, provides resistance to stress corrosion cracking, pitting, and ***-induced crevice corrosion. Alloy 2205 offers acceptable oxidation resistance up to 980°C, but it is only suitable for certain applications because the material becomes brittle when exposed to temperatures ranging from 300°C to 1000°C for extended periods. GENERAL PROPERTIES
Duplex 2205 is a high-performance, two-phase ferritic-austenitic stainless steel alloy, enriched with 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum, and 5-6% nickel. Recognized as the most prevalent duplex stainless steel grade, it boasts a yield strength double that of standard austenitic grades. CORROSION RESISTANCE

HEAT TREATMENT
- Optimal annealing temperature ranges between 1868 to 2012°F (1020 to 1100°C)
- Cannot be hardened through heat treatment, but does work-harden
- Requires special consideration for higher thermal expansion to prevent warping and distortion
PROCESSING - HOT FORMING
- Most producers recommend a maximum hot forming temperature between 2010 and 2100°F (1100 to 1150°C). When the work piece lacks compactness, edges may cool significantly more than the bulk, leading to cracking in the cooler regions.
PROCESSING - COLD FORMING
- Duplex 2205 boasts excellent formability across various fabrications. However, its high strength can present challenges. Even with equipment that has sufficient power, considerations must be made for higher spring-back due to the grade's superior strength.
MACHINABILITY
Processing Duplex 2205 is somewhat more challenging than working with the 300 series austenitic stainless steels, demanding higher cutting forces and resulting in quicker tool wear. To optimize machining: A) Utilize powerful, highly rigid machines with firm tool and workpiece mounting, B) Minimize vibrations by keeping tool extensions short, C) Employ a nose radius on the tool that is just long enough, using sharp-edged carbides while maintaining adequate strength, and D) Ensure machining sequences consistently cut beneath the work-hardened layer from previous passes.

What are the commonly used surfaces of stainless steel coils?
The surface finish of 201 stainless steel coil varies with the cold rolling techniques and post-rolling treatments applied. Common surface treatments include NO.1, 2B, 4, HL, 6, 8, BA, TR hard, heavy rolling bright 2H, polished bright, and several others:
- NO.1: This surface is achieved through hot rolling, heat treatment, and pickling of the stainless steel strip to remove the black oxide scale formed during these processes. The NO.1 surface is silvery white and matte, ranking first in surface treatment. It is typically used in heat-resistant and corrosion-resistant sectors that do not require high surface gloss, such as the alcohol industry, chemical industry, and large containers.
- 2B: In contrast to the 2D surface, the 2B surface is smoothed with a light roller, resulting in a brighter finish. The surface roughness Ra value ranges from 0.1 to 0.5μm, making it highly adaptable for various processing types. The 2B surface is suitable for industries like chemical processing, papermaking, petroleum, medical applications, and building curtain walls.
- TR Hard Surface: TR stainless steel, also known as hard steel, includes grades such as 304 and 301, used for high-strength, high-hardness items like railway vehicles, conveyor belts, springs, and washers. Using the work-hardening properties of austenitic stainless steel, the strength and hardness of the steel plates are enhanced through cold working methods like rolling. The TR hard surface is achieved by rolling the hard material gently without annealing after rolling, replacing the smooth flatness of the 2B base surface.
- Re-Rolled Bright 2H: After the rolling operation, the stainless steel strip undergoes a bright annealing process. Utilizing a continuous annealing line, the strip is rapidly cooled as it travels along the line at a speed of 60-80m/min. This meticulous procedure ensures the surface finish is enhanced to a 2H re-rolled bright, achieving a superior shine and smoothness.
- No. 4: The No. 4 surface delivers an exceptional polishing effect, surpassing the brightness of No. 3. This finish is achieved by polishing a cold-rolled stainless steel plate with a 2D or 2B surface, followed by fine polishing with a sanding belt of 150-180# grit. The resultant surface roughness (Ra) ranges between 0.2 and 1.5μm. No. 4 surface is extensively employed in restaurants, cooking and medical equipment, architectural decor, and various container applications.
- HL: The HL surface, commonly known as a hairline finish, is defined by the Japanese JIS standard as a continuous hairline abrasive surface created using a 150-240# abrasive belt. However, the Chinese GB3280 standard provides less clarity on these specifications. The HL finish is particularly popular in architectural decoration, often seen in elevators, escalators, and exterior walls, adding a touch of elegance and sophistication.
- No. 6: The No. 6 surface is an advanced polish of the No. 4 finish, enhanced with a Tampico brush or W63 grit abrasive as per the GB2477 standard. This finish offers a splendid metallic luster, softness, reduced reflectivity, and no imaging, making it ideal for applications in curtain walls, tassel decorations, and cooking supplies, where aesthetic appeal and performance are paramount.
- BA: The BA surface is achieved through bright heat treatment post-cold rolling. This process involves annealing in a protective atmosphere to prevent oxidation, preserving the glossy cold-rolled finish. Subsequent polishing with a high-precision smooth roller elevates the surface brightness to a near-mirror quality, with surface roughness between 0.05-0.1μm. The BA finish is versatile, suitable for food utensils, household appliances, medical equipment, automotive parts, and decorative purposes.
- No. 8: The No. 8, or mirror surface, offers maximum reflectivity without abrasive particles. Known in the stainless steel deep processing industry as the 8K board, it utilizes BA material as its base, requiring only polishing to achieve a stunning mirror finish. This beautiful and highly reflective surface is frequently used in building entrances and interior decoration, creating a luxurious and modern aesthetic.
