The 431 Stainless Steel Bar Material exhibits outstanding corrosion resistance across a variety of corrosive environments. While it offers moderate resistance to saltwater in cold southern waters, its performance in warm tropical waters is limited. Overall, its corrosion resistance is comparable to or slightly less than that of 304 Grade Material. For optimal performance, ensure a smooth surface finish in the hardened and tempered state.
The material withstands scaling in intermittent service up to 925°C and in continuous service up to 870°C. However, it is generally not recommended for use at temperatures exceeding the tempering temperature due to a reduction in mechanical properties.
Full annealing is impractical for this grade as it hardens even with slow cooling. For Process Annealing, heat to 620-660°C and allow it to air cool.
To harden, heat the material to 980-1065°C, hold for about 30 minutes, then quench in air or oil. Pre-heating at 760-790°C can be beneficial for complex components or those already hardened. Temper the material to meet mechanical requirements, using the indicated temperatures in the provided table.
Avoid tempering within the 425-600°C range as it leads to reduced impact toughness, though the effect is less pronounced compared to other martensitic grades.
Welding is challenging due to the risk of cracking. Pre-heat the material to 200-300°C before welding. While Grade 410 filler rod is suitable, Grades 308L, 309, or 310 offer more ductile welds if matching properties are not required. Post-weld heat treatment at 650°C is advisable.
In its annealed condition, this grade is relatively easy to machine. However, once hardened above 30 HRC, machining becomes more difficult. The Ugima Improved Machinability version of Grade 431 offers a significant enhancement in machining speeds and tool longevity.
Common applications include nuts and bolts, propeller shafting, pump shafts, beater bars, and marine hardware.
The specified properties are for bar products as per ASTM A276. Similar properties may apply to other products like plates and forgings as outlined in their respective specifications.
