Fabrication Data
- Alloy 904L is effortlessly welded and processed using conventional shop fabrication methods, maintaining high efficiency and performance.
Cold Forming
- 904L showcases considerable ductility and forms with ease. The inclusion of molybdenum and nitrogen may necessitate stronger processing equipment compared to standard 304/304L grades.
Hot Forming
- Hot working procedures for 904L require a temperature range of 1562 to 2102°F (850-1150°C). Post-hot working, a solution anneal and quench are normally recommended. However, if hot forming is halted above 2012°F (1100°C) and followed immediately by quenching, no further heat treatment is needed. Ensure the entire workpiece is quenched from above 2012°F (1100°C). If cooling occurs below this temperature or is too slow, follow up with solution annealing and quenching. 904L should be solution annealed at 1940-2084°F (1060-1140°C).
Machining
- The cold work hardening rate of Alloy 904L poses more machining challenges compared to 410 and 304 stainless steels.
Welding
- Alloy 904L is compatible with most standard welding methods. The austenitic structure and balanced alloying elements distribution minimize segregation during welding. Redistribution of elements like molybdenum, chromium, and nickel can occur, but 904L's lower segregation ensures superior corrosion resistance. It can be welded with or without filler metal, typically using a filler of the same composition.
- Welding consumables suited for 904L include the 20 25 CuL covered electrode and 20 25 CuL wire, ensuring optimum weld quality and performance.
