Type 409 Stainless Steel (UNS S40900) is a stabilized ferritic stainless steel known for superior oxidation and corrosion resistance over carbon steel. Its ease of manufacture, combined with excellent corrosion resistance and cost-effectiveness, has significantly broadened its application from automotive exhaust systems to various other non-automotive uses. ASTM A240 delineates three (3) subcategories of Type 409 stainless steel: UNS S40910, UNS S40920, and UNS S40930. These designations differ slightly in Ti or Nb stabilization requirements. In the absence of specific purchaser instructions, any of these compositions may be supplied as UNS S40900. The product is fabricated with enhanced formability properties, recognized in the industry as 'High Performance' or 'Ultra Form.'

Grade 409
- Grade 409 is a titanium-stabilized ferritic stainless steel, recognized for its versatility. Primarily used in automotive exhaust systems, this general-purpose chromium stainless steel excels in applications demanding robust mechanical properties, exceptional corrosion resistance, and superior weldability, even at elevated temperatures.
- Meeting stringent ASTM standards, including ASTM A240M for flat-rolled steel, Grade 409 is now categorized under sub-grades S40910, S40920, and S40930, offering a refined classification compared to the generic Grade 409.
- These sub-grades are stabilized to various degrees with titanium, niobium, or a mix of both. Each can be certified as S40900 (Grade 409). Notably, ASTM A268M specifies standard Grade 409 for tubes.
Corrosion Resistance:
- Grade 409 offers commendable resistance to both atmospheric and exhaust gas corrosion. While a superficial rust layer might form in certain environments, it functions as a barrier, preventing further corrosion. Though not suitable for cosmetic applications, its corrosion resistance parallels that of 3CR12 and 12% chromium martensitic grades (410), albeit lower than the 17% chromium grade 430.
Heat Resistance:
- Grade 409 withstands scaling at intermittent temperatures up to 815°C and continuous temperatures up to 675°C, though these limits can vary based on specific service conditions.
Heat Treatment:
- To anneal, heat Grade 409 to 790-900°C and allow it to cool in air. This grade cannot be strengthened through heat treatment.
Welding:
- Welding Grade 409 is straightforward, though a preheat of 150-260°C is recommended. While Grade 409 or 430 electrodes or filler rods are suitable, AS 1554.6 pre-qualifies welding with Grade 309 rods or electrodes, producing a more ductile weld.
- Post-weld annealing at 760-815°C enhances weld ductility.
For small sections, post-weld annealing is unnecessary. Automotive exhaust tubing is often welded without filler metal (autogenously).
To mitigate grain formation effects, welding should use minimal heat.
Typical Applications:
Automotive exhaust systems, including catalytic converters and mufflers.
Specified Properties:
- ASTM A268M defines the parameters of Grade 409 for annealed tubing, while ASTM A240M stipulates the composition for additional grades used in coil and sheet applications. Specifications for other products may have similar but not identical properties.
Forming:
- Grade 409 stainless steel can be easily cut, blanked, stretch-formed, and drawn. Its formability is quite comparable to that of carbon steel.
