CORROSION RESISTANCE:

• Boasting superior resistance compared to 304, this alloy excels in a wide range of atmospheric environments and various corrosive media, thanks to its enhanced chromium
  and molybdenum content.
• Susceptible to pitting and crevice corrosion in warm chloride environments, and to stress corrosion cracking beyond approximately 122°F (50°C).
• Deemed resistant to potable water with up to roughly 1000mg/L chlorides at ambient temperatures, reducing to about 500mg/L at
  140°F (60°C).
• Often referred to as the "marine grade stainless steel", although it is not immune to warm sea water.

HEAT RESISTANCE:

• Exhibits excellent oxidation resistance in intermittent service up to 1600°F (870°C) and in continuous service up to 1700°F (925°C).
• Grade 316L shows greater resistance to carbide precipitation.

WELDING CHARACTERISTICS:

• Offers outstanding weldability by all standard fusion techniques, both with and without filler metals.
• Heavy welded sections of Grade 316 necessitate post-weld annealing for optimal corrosion resistance, a requirement not needed for Grade 316L.

HEAT TREATMENT:

• The annealing temperature range spans from 1900 to 2100°F (1038 to 1149°C).
• Cannot be hardened by heat treatment.
• Special measures must be taken to account for a higher coefficient of thermal expansion to prevent warping and distortion.

PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:

• Most manufacturers suggest a maximum forging temperature between 2100°F and 2300°F.
• Avoid forging below 1700°F (927°C). Optimal
• corrosion resistance is achieved if the forgings receive a final anneal.

PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:

• Types 316/316L, known for their extreme toughness and ductility, can be effortlessly cold worked through processes like roll forming, swaging, cold heading, deep drawing,
  bending, etc., with ease.
• Severely cold-formed parts should be annealed to alleviate stresses.

MACHINEABILITY:

• Type 316/316L is slightly more challenging to machine than Type 304 due to its toughness.
• 316/316L exhibits tough and strong chip characteristics during machining.
• The use of chip breakers and curlers is recommended.
• Utilize the largest possible tool and ample amounts of cutting fluid.
• Consider heavy positive feeds at low speeds as 316/316L work hardens quickly.
