Type 904L is a high alloy austenitic stainless steel renowned for its exceptional corrosion resistance. Known as UNS N08904, 904L is a super austenitic stainless steel that excels in various process settings with moderate to high corrosion resistance. Its high chromium and nickel content, combined with molybdenum and copper, guarantees superior to exceptional corrosion resistance. With its highly alloyed composition (25% nickel and 4.5% molybdenum), 904L surpasses 316L and 317L molybdenum-reinforced stainless steels in resisting chloride stress corrosion cracking, pitting, and general corrosion. Initially designed to endure dilute sulfuric acid conditions, 904L is also resilient against most organic and inorganic acids, including hot phosphoric acid. The 904L alloy is easily weldable and can be managed using standard shop fabrication methods.

Fabrication Data

Cold Forming
- 904L stainless steel exhibits impressive ductility, making it easy to form. However, the addition of molybdenum and nitrogen necessitates more robust processing equipment compared to standard 304/304L grades.
Hot Forming
- Hot working procedures for 904L require maintaining temperatures between 1562 to 2102°F (850-1150°C). Typically, post-hot working involves solution annealing and quenching. If hot forming ceases above 2012°F (1100°C) and immediate quenching follows, the material may be used without further heat treatment. Proper quenching from temperatures above 2012°F (1100°C) is crucial. If partial heating or cooling falls below this threshold, or cooling is too slow, follow-up solution annealing and quenching are imperative. 904L should be solution annealed at 1940-2084°F (1060-1140°C).
Machining
- The cold work hardening rate of Alloy 904L poses more machining challenges compared to 410 and 304 stainless steels.
Welding
- Alloy 904L is compatible with most conventional welding methods. Its uniform austenitic structure and balanced alloying elements distribution make it ideal for welding. Elements such as molybdenum, chromium, and nickel redistribute during solidification post-welding. These segregations, although present, are less pronounced in 904L, mitigating potential corrosion issues. The alloy is typically welded using filler metal of identical composition but can also be welded without filler metal.
- The recommended welding consumables for 904L are 20 25 CuL covered electrode and 20 25 CuL wire, ensuring optimal welding performance and structural integrity.
