CORROSION RESISTANCE:

• This grade offers superior resistance compared to 304 in a variety of atmospheric environments and corrosive media, thanks to its elevated chromium and molybdenum content.

HEAT TREATMENT:

• Optimal annealing occurs within the temperature range of 1900 to 2100°F (1038 to 1149°C).
• Cannot be hardened through heat treatment.
• Special accommodations must be made to account for its high coefficient of thermal expansion to prevent warping and distortion.

PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:

• Most manufacturers recommend a forging temperature range from 2100°F to 2300°F.
• Avoid forging below 1700°F (927°C). For optimal corrosion resistance, a final anneal should be performed.
• Corrosion resistance is obtained if the forgings are given a final anneal.

PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:

• Types 316/316L are exceptionally tough and ductile, allowing for easy cold working processes such as roll forming, swaging, cold heading, and deep drawing.
