CORROSION RESISTANCE:

316L Stainless Steel Rod

  • This premium 316L Stainless Steel Rod exhibits superior resistance compared to 304, thanks to its enhanced chromium and molybdenum content, making it ideal for a wide range of atmospheric and corrosive environments.

  • Please note, it is prone to pitting and crevice corrosion in warm chloride environments and may experience stress corrosion cracking at temperatures exceeding 122°F (50°C).
  • It stands resilient against potable water with chloride levels up to approximately 1000mg/L at ambient temperatures, decreasing to around 500mg/L at
    140°F (60°C).
  • Often referred to as the 'marine grade stainless steel,' it is important to note that it is not impervious to warm sea water.

HEAT RESISTANCE:

  • Exhibiting excellent oxidation resistance, this grade performs well up to 1600°F (870°C) in intermittent service and up to 1700°F (925°C) in continuous service.
  • Grade 316L offers superior resistance to carbide precipitation.

WELDING CHARACTERISTICS:

  • This stainless steel rod delivers exceptional weldability with all standard fusion methods, whether using filler metals or not.
  • For maximum corrosion resistance, heavy welded sections in Grade 316 require post-weld annealing. This step is not necessary for Grade 316L.

HEAT TREATMENT:

  • The ideal annealing temperature range for this material is between 1900 and 2100°F (1038 to 1149°C).
  • Note that this grade cannot be hardened through heat treatment.
  • Consideration must be given to the higher coefficient of thermal expansion to prevent warping and distortion.

PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:

  • Most manufacturers recommend a maximum forging temperature between 2100°F and 2300°F.
  • Avoid forging below 1700°F (927°C).
  • Optimum corrosion resistance is achieved if the forgings undergo a final anneal.

PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:

  • 316/316L Stainless Steel Rod types are exceptionally tough and ductile, allowing for easy cold working processes such as roll forming, swaging, cold heading, deep drawing,
    bending, and more, with minimal difficulty.
  • Parts subjected to severe cold forming should be annealed to relieve stresses.

MACHINEABILITY:

  • The toughness of Type 316/316L Stainless Steel Rod makes it slightly more challenging to machine than Type 304.
  • When machining 316/316L, expect tough and strong chip characteristics.
  • Utilize chip breakers and curlers for optimal results.
  • Employing large tools and ample cutting fluid is highly recommended.
  • Opt for heavy positive feeds at low speeds to counteract rapid work hardening of 316/316L.
