The 431 Stainless Steel Bar Material boasts exceptional corrosion resistance against a multitude of corrosive media. While it exhibits some resilience to salt water in cooler southern waters, it may not perform as well in warmer tropical waters. Its corrosion resistance is comparable to or slightly lower than 304 Grade Material. Optimal performance is achieved in a hardened and tempered condition with a smooth surface finish.
431 Stainless Steel resists scaling in intermittent service up to 925°C and in continuous service up to 870°C. However, it is generally not recommended for usage beyond the relevant tempering temperature due to a reduction in mechanical properties.
Full annealing is not practical for this grade as it hardens even with slow cooling. Process Annealing involves heating to 620-660°C followed by air cooling.
Hardening is achieved by heating to 980-1065°C, holding for approximately 30 minutes, then quenching in air or oil. Pre-heating at 760-790°C can be beneficial for complex parts or those already hardened. Tempering can be tailored to suit specific mechanical requirements, with temperatures outlined in the accompanying table.
The tempering range of 425-600°C should be avoided due to diminished impact toughness, although the effect is less pronounced compared to most other martensitic grades.
Welding this material can be challenging due to cracking risks. Pre-heating to 200-300°C is recommended before welding. While a Grade 410 filler rod can be used, Grades 308L, 309, or 310 will yield more ductile welds if matching properties are not essential. Post-weld heat treatment should be done at 650°C.
In its annealed state, this grade is relatively easy to machine. However, once hardened above 30HRC, machining becomes more challenging. The Ugima Improved Machinability version of Grade 431 significantly enhances achievable machining speeds and tool life.
Ideal for applications such as nuts and bolts, propeller shafting, pump shafts, beater bars, and various marine hardware.
These properties are specified for bar products under ASTM A276. Similar, though not necessarily identical properties, are specified for other products such as plates and forgings under their respective specifications.
Stainless steel round bars are extensively utilized in a broad spectrum of applications, ranging from construction to automotive parts. Acknowledging the diverse usage scenarios, Daxun Alloys provides stainless steel round bars in various grades and sizes.
