Type 201 stainless steel is an austenitic, chromium-nickel-manganese alloy engineered for nickel conservation. As an economical alternative to traditional Cr-Ni stainless steels like 301 and 304, Type 201 substitutes nickel with manganese and nitrogen. While it cannot be heat-hardened, it achieves high tensile strength through cold working. Non-magnetic in its annealed state, it becomes magnetic after cold working. Type 201's mid-range properties make it suitable for appliances, kitchenware, automotive parts, and more, although it's less suited for outdoor structures due to susceptibility to pitting and crevice corrosion from elements like seawater.
