What Is Duplex 2507 Stainless Steel?
Duplex 2507 stainless steel is a high-performance super duplex alloy, engineered with a low carbon content (up to 0.03%), and enriched with approximately 25% chromium, 7% nickel, and 4% molybdenum. This unique composition ensures that Duplex 2507 meets the stringent demands of applications requiring exceptional strength and superior corrosion resistance. Ideal for chemical process equipment, the petrochemical sector, and seawater systems, this steel boasts remarkable resistance to chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking. Its high chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content bestows it with outstanding pitting, crevice, and overall corrosion resistance.
How Is Duplex 2507 Stainless Steel Made?
- The manufacturing of Duplex 2507 stainless steel parallels the production of other contemporary high-alloy steels. The process begins in an electric arc furnace where scrap steel is melted and alloying elements are meticulously added. The molten steel is then transferred to an AOD (argon oxygen decarburization) converter, where crucial processes like decarburization, sulfur refinement, and gas removal occur.
- During the AOD process, nitrogen is generally infused into the steel. Subsequently, the molten steel is directed to a ladle furnace for the adjustment of inclusions.
- Following these initial procedures, the molten steel is moved to the casting operation, capable of producing either solitary ingots or continuous blooms. These solidified steel forms are subsequently reheated and meticulously forged or rolled to attain the desired thickness. To ensure a homogeneous internal structure, the material undergoes solution annealing, followed by rapid water quenching.
- Fabrication of Duplex 2507 pipe materials can be achieved through both hot and cold forming processes. Hot forming requires a temperature range of 1024°C to 1232°C. Post hot forming, solution annealing should be conducted at temperatures between 1052°C and 1125°C, followed by rapid water quenching. Cold forming techniques, which include bending, deep drawing, extruding, and pressing, also necessitate a subsequent heat treatment encompassing solution annealing and quenching.
How Does Duplex 2507 Stainless Steel Differ From Duplex Steel?
- Duplex 2507 stainless steel, classified as a super duplex stainless steel, distinctly features a microstructure comprising roughly equal parts ferrite and austenite. This dual-phase structure amalgamates the most desirable characteristics of each phase, endowing the steel with high corrosion resistance and robust mechanical strength. Diverse duplex steel grades offer varying levels of corrosion resistance. While they exhibit excellent resistance to localized corrosion, including pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking, the precise resistance level depends on the specific grade and alloy composition. Duplex stainless steels are categorized into four groups based on their PREN (Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number) range, with super duplex stainless steel possessing a PREN number between 38 and 45.
