Finish Designation Method and degree of finish
No.1 After hot rolling, heat treatment, pickling or other equivalent treatment is applied.
No.2D Annealing and pickling are performed after cold rolling; material is soft with surface of silver-white luster; used for general applications and deep drawing.
No.2B After 2D finish, skin pass rolling is performed to obtain a more suitable luster; the surface becomes very exquisite; used for general applications.
No.3 Intermediate 100-120 grit finish; used for applications in which surface polishing is performed after shaping.
No.4 General 150-180 grit finish; used for restaurants and kitchen equipment and tools.
#240 240 grit finish; used when a finer finish than No. 4 is required; typically for restaurants and kitchen equipment and tools.
#320 320 grit finish polished product.
HL This finish is performed by continuous linear polishing using an abrasive of appropriate grain size; mainly used for architectural applications.
BA Achieved by performing bright annealing after cold rolling and then skin pass rolling to obtain even greater reflectance; provides excellent corrosion resistance; used for household appliances, kitchen equipment, and automobiles.
8K Through multiple grinding, it achieves very high brightness and smoothness, like a mirror.

CORROSION RESISTANCE:

  • Our Alloy 17-4 is highly resistant to corrosive attacks, outperforming any of the standard hardenable stainless steels.
  • Comparable to Alloy 304 in most media, ensuring robust performance in various environments.
  • It's corrosion resistant in several demanding industries like chemical, petroleum, dairy, and food processing.
  • However, please note it is susceptible to crevice or pitting attack if exposed to stagnant sea water for prolonged periods.

WELDABILITY:

  • Successfully welded using most common fusion and resistance methods, ensuring a strong and reliable bond.
  • Not suitable for joining by oxyacetylene welding, as this method may compromise integrity.
  • Typically, no pre-heating is required, simplifying the welding process and saving time.
  • Maintain inter-pass temperatures below 248°F to ensure optimal results and prevent deformation.
  • Achieve better toughness in the weld with a thorough heat treatment post-welding.

ELEVATED TEMPERATURE USE:

  • Exhibits excellent oxidation resistance up to approximately 1100°F, enhancing durability.
  • Prolonged exposure to high temperatures may lead to reduced toughness in precipitation-hardened conditions.

PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:

  • For forging, heat uniformly to 2150-2200°F, holding for half an hour per inch of thickness for best results.
  • Ideal hot forming temperature range is 650-900°F, maintaining the steel's austenitic structure.
  • Re-heat treat forgings at 1875-1925°F to ensure optimal hardness conditions before further processing.
  • Cool forgings to below 90°F to promote grain refinement and enhance structural integrity.

PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:

  • Alloy 17-4 is best suited for mild operations in the annealed (solution treated) condition due to its inherent hardness.
  • For severe cold working, heat treat to condition H1150 to minimize the risk of cracking and ensure durability.
  • A bend radius greater than 7T is often necessary to prevent material failure during forming.
  • Re-age at the precipitation-hardening temperature after cold forming to improve stress corrosion resistance.

MACHINABILITY:

  • Can be machined effectively in both solution-treated and precipitation-hardening conditions, providing versatility.

Mechanical Properties

  • Type 17-4PH stainless steel offers excellent mechanical properties, combining high strength and hardness with superior corrosion resistance. It is a cost-effective alternative to many high-nickel, non-ferrous alloys.
