316/316L stainless steel alloy is an austenitic stainless steel pipe containing molybdenum. The increased nickel and molybdenum content of this grade enhances its overall corrosion resistance compared to 304, especially against pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments. Additionally, 316/316L seamless pipe offers exceptional high-temperature tensile strength, creep, and stress rupture resistance, along with outstanding formability and weldability. 316L, a low carbon form of 316, resists sensitization, making it ideal for large-size welded components.

CORROSION RESISTANCE:

• 316 Stainless Steel demonstrates superior resilience compared to 304 in various atmospheric conditions and numerous corrosive media, thanks to its elevated chromium and molybdenum content.
  This composition makes it particularly resistant.
• However, it is susceptible to pitting and crevice corrosion in warm chloride environments and stress corrosion cracking at temperatures above 122°F (50°C).
• 316 Stainless Steel is considered resistant to potable water containing up to 1000mg/L chlorides at ambient temperatures. This tolerance reduces to about 500mg/L at
  140°F (60°C).
• Often referred to as the 'marine grade stainless steel,' it should be noted that it is not resistant to warm seawater.

HEAT RESISTANCE:

• 316 Stainless Steel boasts excellent oxidation resistance during intermittent service up to 1600°F (870°C) and continuous service up to 1700°F (925°C).
• Grade 316L, on the other hand, offers enhanced resistance to carbide precipitation.

WELDING CHARACTERISTICS:

• 316 Stainless Steel exhibits exceptional weldability by all standard fusion methods, with and without filler metals.
• For heavy welded sections in Grade 316, post-weld annealing is necessary to achieve maximum corrosion resistance, a requirement not needed for Grade 316L.

HEAT TREATMENT:

• The annealing temperature range for 316 Stainless Steel is between 1900 and 2100°F (1038 to 1149°C).
• This alloy cannot be hardened by heat treatment.
• Special consideration should be given to its higher coefficient of thermal expansion to prevent warping and distortion.

PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:

• Most producers recommend a maximum forging temperature range of 2100°F to 2300°F.
• Do not forge below 1700°F (927°C).
• For optimal corrosion resistance, ensure the forgings undergo a final anneal.

PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:

• Types 316/316L, being extremely tough and ductile, can be cold worked easily through methods such as roll forming, swaging, cold heading, deep drawing,
  and bending, without any difficulty.
• Severely cold-formed parts should be annealed to relieve stresses.

MACHINEABILITY:

• Due to its toughness, Type 316/316L is somewhat harder to machine than Type 304.
• It features chip characteristics that are notably tough and strong.
• Using chip breakers and curlers is advisable.
• Employing large tools with significant amounts of cutting fluid ensures better results.
• Consider heavy positive feeds at low speeds since 316/316L work hardens quickly.
