CORROSION RESISTANCE:

• Thanks to the increased chromium and molybdenum content, 316 stainless steel generally exhibits superior resistance compared to 304 in a range of atmospheric environments and many corrosive media.

• Offers excellent weldability through all standard fusion methods, both with and without filler metals.

HEAT TREATMENT:

• The annealing temperature range is from 1900 to 2100°F (1038 to 1149°C).
• Note that it cannot be hardened by heat treatment.
• Special precautions are necessary to account for a higher coefficient of thermal expansion to prevent warping and distortion.

PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:

• Most manufacturers recommend a maximum forging temperature between 2100°F and 2300°F.
• Avoid forging below 1700°F (927°C).
• Corrosion resistance is optimized when the forgings undergo a final annealing process.

PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:

• Types 316/316L are exceptionally tough and ductile, making them ideal for cold working processes such as roll forming, swaging, cold heading, deep drawing,
  bending, etc., without significant difficulty.
• Severely cold-formed parts should be annealed to relieve stresses.

MACHINABILITY:

• Type 316/316L is somewhat more challenging to machine than Type 304 due to its enhanced toughness.
• The machining process for 316/316L involves chip characteristics that are robust and sturdy.
• Using chip breakers and curlers is highly recommended.
• Utilize the largest possible tool and copious amounts of cutting fluid.
• Heavy positive feeds at low speeds should be applied, as 316/316L work hardens rapidly.
