CORROSION RESISTANCE:

• Boasting superior resistance compared to 304 stainless steel across a variety of atmospheric environments and corrosive media, thanks to enhanced chromium
  and molybdenum content.
• Prone to pitting and crevice corrosion in warm chloride environments, and stress corrosion cracking above approx. 122°F (50°C).
• Resistant to potable water with chloride levels up to 1000mg/L at room temperature, decreasing to 500mg/L at
  140°F (60°C).
• Commonly referred to as the 'marine grade stainless steel', though it is not resistant to warm sea water.

HEAT RESISTANCE:

• Exhibits excellent oxidation resistance in intermittent service up to 1600°F (870°C) and continuous service up to 1700°F (925°C).
• Grade 316L offers superior resistance to carbide precipitation.

WELDING CHARACTERISTICS:

• Demonstrates exceptional weldability through all standard fusion techniques, both with and without filler metals.
• Heavy welded sections in Grade 316 necessitate post-weld annealing for optimal corrosion resistance; this is unnecessary for Grade 316L.

HEAT TREATMENT:

• The recommended annealing temperature range is between 1900 and 2100°F (1038 to 1149°C).
• Heat treatment cannot harden this grade.
• Special attention is required to account for a higher coefficient of thermal expansion to prevent warping and distortion.

PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:

• Most manufacturers advise a maximum forging temperature between 2100°F and 2300°F.
• Avoid forging below 1700°F (927°C). Best
• corrosion resistance is achieved with a final anneal after forging.

PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:

• 316/316L types, known for their toughness and ductility, are readily cold worked via techniques such as roll forming, swaging, cold heading, deep drawing,
  and bending without difficulty.
• Severely cold-formed parts should be annealed to relieve stresses.

MACHINEABILITY:

• Type 316/316L is more challenging to machine than Type 304 due to its toughness.
• 316/316L produces tough and strong chip characteristics.
• Chip breakers and curlers are recommended.
• Utilize the largest feasible tool and substantial amounts of cutting fluid.
• Consider heavy positive feeds at low speeds to counteract rapid work hardening in 316/316L.
